The new forthcoming BCP

In case you haven't read the topics about the recent changes around here, what you're currently reading is an interim version of Backcountry Pilot.

Earlier this month, I took the plunge to update our forum software, which had become dangerously outdated. The developers of this software are constantly fixing security bugs that keep the baddies from infiltrating the forum, presumably to spam us, but possibly to access more sensitive data, and even vandalize or destroy the site. I had so heavily modified the previous version, that applying the update patches was ineffective. I'd rather be on a more secure version with fewer features, that constantly dealing with fixing damage from an attack.

I understand that many of you don't like the extreme white look of this current version. You're in luck! It will only be in place until the next version of the site that I am working on is put into production. Soon we'll be back to having a normal homepage, with cool marquee photos, news updates, articles, latest forum posts, latest videos, etc, and an easier-on-the-eyes color scheme.

We'll also have some new features like better Shortfield.com integration, event calendar, and a few social networking features like user blogs, user-defined groups (i.e. PNW pilots, Talkeetna pilots, Stinson owners, etc) in a sort of Facebook fashion.

Stuff will probably break, and there will be problems and bugs, but in my opinion it's important to have more to this site than just the forum.

Thanks for your patience and continued participation. I don't have a timeline for release yet, because I am working on this in my spare time, and that's a little unpedictable. If you'd like to support the site, simply use your mouse on the ad-links at the bottom of every forum page.

Thanks!

Re: The new forthcoming BCP

I have a feeling that white stuff falling from the sky has been tempting you. Well, we only got 42" in the mountains in the last few days. Thanks for the update and the hard work.

I've got so much crap going on with work and family and a broken airplane to fix and free time measured in minutes....drivin' me nuts. So if you find a bunch of free time out there.......send some my way.

Re: The new forthcoming BCP

I guess I'll chime-in here too:

Zane and I have been working together to figure out the best way for our sites to compliment each other and to that end I'm also in the process of upgrading and improving both the shortfield.com site and the shortfield exlplorer (SFx) tool. I'm hoping to release an improved version of SFx this week and I would really like to get everyone's feedback and feature requests, and I'd also like to hear your thoughts on how to promote participation, so that people are sharing more airport information as the flying season picks-up (i.e. this is a community tool, so tell me how to make SFx/shortfield.com more useful for you). :)

You will probably get flamed for changing away from the look it has now.

Chris and Zane I still don't see the Pay Pal donation key.

I just love a guy that takes a lickin and keeps on ticken. I check the site at least once a day. I appreciate the effort and I don't care what color it is. You could have a Interstate Owners Blog Site, but I would still be alone. Good job! =D> =D>

While aviation has made the world a smaller place, if you fall, it's still hard to miss!

Along the lines of pireps for airstrips on the ShortField.Com site, one thing that would be neat would be to list some of the nearby amenities, interesting sites, or stuff to do. If these items could be searched, a person could find all the reports for SE Oregon that are close to hotsprings, like the Alvord Desert; mogas available with a burger, like Denio Junction; etc. Some gentle reminders to pirep authors could help get more of the peripheral information into the reports.

Both BCP and Shortfield are great sites. Keep up the good work, Zane and Chris.
