Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: The new forthcoming BCP

Zane has been fairly quit here on BCP lately. Maybe he's working hard on the new website???? Hahahaha.......... yeah right. He's probably busy with the "Honey Do" list!

Ditto on the kudos from here. I certainly do enjoy hanging out with y'all. There's only one other forum I've enjoyed as much and that has to do with guitar amps. It can't hold a candle to this place for humor and orneryness. White's fine by me.

Not enough hours in the day. Give me 2 weeks of free time, and it will be incredible.

I've come to the conclusion that doing a big rollout will never happen due to timing, and data migration issues. You'll see changes happening over weeks and months instead.

I agree with lc.

You gotta be careful what you wish for! I told a buddy one time that I was so busy I was going to have to clone myself. His response. " why, just be one more piece of shit around"

Along the lines of pireps for airstrips on the ShortField.Com site, one thing that would be neat would be to list some of the nearby amenities, interesting sites, or stuff to do. If these items could be searched, a person could find all the reports for SE Oregon that are close to hotsprings, like the Alvord Desert; mogas available with a burger, like Denio Junction; etc. Some gentle reminders to pirep authors could help get more of the peripheral information into the reports.

Both BCP and Shortfield are great sites. Keep up the good work, Zane and Chris.

Here's a carrot to dangle in front of your (Zane) nose:
Put up a Donate Button & I'll send you $100. Immediately.

As to adding features & member bennies, our BC Floatplane website: www.bcfloatplane.com has a great (growing) "Places To Fly" section where folks add good places to fly, with pix, writeups, pireps, google co-ords, & etc. You can even list places/amenities like fuel, cabins, docks, whatever someone might have listed in the description... and find these things along your flight path, with a given corridor. Enter: cabins & fuel within 50 mi. of my flight path, and get a list! Check it out, and I can put you in touch w/the webmeister & I believe he will help/guide/chide you. :)

Also, I'm sure you're aware of www.supercub.org it has lots'a great features too, and Steve has been known to help fellow websites. It's growing fast too.

Now, just to sit back & wait for my referral checks to roll in!

There is one, it's just not out in the open. Go to the top of the page and you'll see a link to the BCP Clothing store page. Or click here.

Then on the bottom right of that page you'll see a PayPal Donate button, or click here.

Z doesn't really want this to be a paid for site and doesn't really like the idea of asking for donations to help with it's costs. Most of us pretty much feel he should take donations, and the button was placed on the store (though I bet he really didn't want to) so we could have a way to help out with the costs. I hope more people donate. Z's pretty busy with his new wife and house, and if we toss enough cash his way for this site, it'll make things easier on him and we ensure we get to keep this great forum!

It wouldn't hurt for folks that advertise their own for-profit business in the guise of posts/threads to actually pay.

Yeah, both. Try getting to know the place a bit before telling Zane how he should run it.

But props for donating =D>

Re: The new forthcoming BCP

Imagine me tapping a beer stein with a steak knife a few times while standing up on a chair:

I hate that I still have to say this, but... I'm pretty busy. I'm extremely fortunate to have landed a project that pays pretty well, and I have been focusing on that for the last 2 years. I landed this prized project, which is very time consuming, right as I started making announcements about the new BCP. That was in the days of being self-employed (technically) and not having much of a workload. How I could afford a plane back then... I do not know. Well, I couldn't, it turns out. :P

I had us really close to BCP 2.0 back then (May 2010), but stuff like migrating our 10GB of photos from this gallery to the new one, migrating the forum data to a new forum software, and managing to do it without interrupting service was a challenge. The software packages I planned to use were a little immature in their development, and I hit a point where I couldn't create a situation where I broke something and had to let it sit while I worked to pay the mortgage.

The donations and shirt/jacket sales have helped a lot. The BCP bank account pays for increased hosting costs, as we've experience A LOT more traffic to the site in the last year. I ramped up our server resources recently, and the cost went from... well it went up by hundreds of percent. I'll likely have to reevaluate server resources again when I begin using new software, as it's a little more demanding. The advertising from Google ads helps quit a bit too. Thanks for tolerating those. I don't really make money on this, but I have some adequate income from the ads and shirt sales to keep it alive without my personal income needing to support it, and I do keep them separate. I don't want to pad my income, I want to create a backcountry flying community. I've already been well paid in making friends, and having aviation experiences around the country just by virtue of being a member here.

I think information sharing should be free, with knowledge contribution being the currency, which is why I don't push a membership structure like supercub.org has. It works well for them, but it's just not me. The only benefit I see to that is selling access to a private section occupied by users you trust, with real identities, but even then you're not safe. I'm still working on that problem.

Anyway, long story short, there will be a staggered rollout. BCP will get a new face, but you'll use the old forum for a while. I want a single login to give you guys access to all the features, so there's always a challenge in deciding how to do that. The photo gallery might go offline for..a while. Luckily many of you use your own Photobucket, Picasa, Flickr, accounts anyway.

So, I do think about this a lot. Luckily we have enough personality and stuff to BS about that a simple forum has kept us entertained for years...

Re: The new forthcoming BCP

Your doing a good job, Zane!! Like most others, I'm pretty much used to this version as it is. When the time comes, I won't give you any fuss if you have to shut down the site for a day or two (or a little more) to upgrade the servers or whatever you gotta do. :D

I honestly could care less of an upgrade. I'm content with what we have an am happy with supporting maintenance for the current stuff. I just don't want it to go away and that's why I take the opportunity to share where the donate button is when I can. 8)

The new forthcoming BCP

Zane,

I am a noob to the site, I can't tell east from west, but I swear, this is the best forum I have ever joined. I have gained more and have enjoyed my time more. And there are a bunch of smartasses on here just like the smartass friends I deal with at home. :)
I think that might be, besides all the talk of airplanes, the attraction.

As a noob, I don't feel you need to worry about the new site, it's all new to me. I am also glad to learn about the donate button. We damn sure don't want it to go away.
