Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Re: The opposite of my current existence

I could do that......for a while.... Love the view, but would have to have some wind under my wings a little more often then he's getting

Re: The opposite of my current existence

The first one is pretty isolated, I suspect one would have to be an extreme introvert to enjoy that.

The second one is more my style, having a close community of neighbors that you help, and they help you without complete chaos.

I wonder how they fund their living without jobs. Off grid living is totally doable around here, but how would you make a buck?

Perhaps doing tech work from satellite internet, or a month on month off situation.....

NZ looks like heaven, but without any big predators I find it super-boring. Throw in some grizzlies, lions, and a wolverine or two and it'd be perfect.

Being from Georgia, and after having just seeing the guy on the national news getting mauled by a lion, the idea of living somewhere that if I land, I could get eaten scares me to death!

The opposite of my current existence

A few years ago Hoser the Wonder Dog and I spent five months alone up on our Dean Channel place in BC. No roads. No Internet. No phone. 70 miles boat or floats from the nearest town.

Enjoyed every single peaceful and quiet minute of it.

I'm in Northern Virginia which puts me 70 miles from the nearest mile stretch of road that doesn't have a Target, Starbucks, Home Depot and two stop lights on it.

To me, isolation is working in the garage all day with the door closed :(

Now that just ain't right... I'm so redneck I keep a plug of tobacco in the gripspace of my Glock. But the awareness and humility and introspection I get from sharing space with non-human animals who can kill me at will if they so choose is one of the fundamental joys of my life. Great white sharks, grizzly bears, crocodiles, vipers...I deeply value their existence and my opportunity to share space with them. I draw the line at ticks, parasitic worms, and viruses, but I'm somewhat of a coward.

Without something to be cautious of, there's no reason to pay attention. Might be the reason some of us fly little airplanes instead of ride the bus...

Re: The opposite of my current existence

I believe I've "met" the Lookout Mt.....lookout guy. If it's just north and a bit east of Leadore, and 8K or a bit above, still south of Lost Trail Pass, and also east of Salmon, I'm sure I have. Met, as in when I spotted the shack I was at first surprised as it's I'm almost sure over 8K. Then as I got closer I was even more surprised to see it was manned. At that point, it would have just been damn unfriendly to not get a bit closer, and give a wing waggle and a salute, or maybe it was a thumbs up, could have been both. I got a friendly wave in return, and it kind of made the flight, two ships passing in the night, and then we both returned to our solitude, cool.

Hammer , A man has to know his limitations, and some of mine I have discovered at 58 ,is that I'm not as fast runner as most people I hang with nowadays, and I definitely would want to be able to out run whoever is in the crowd Were I to land at some of the places that you like to travel.
I do truly admire people like yourself though, I just have never been one to expose myself to anything that's more crazy or unpredictable than myself .
I can find enough things to endanger my life by accident without doing it on purpose.
