DVR is set! That article talks about how they focus if Ariel gets her PPL. A quick check in the FAA shows that she's still a student pilot...but we know they're slow to update anyway.

Blessed are the curious, for they shall have great adventures!

Re: Tweeto's On Tonight

I enjoy Flying Wild Alaska and last night's episode was good, but I wish they'd show more on bush flying. I don't consider what they show most of the time as bush flying. Most of the time they're using nosewheel airplanes and landing on hard surface runways. There's a lot of wind and often bad weather or bad runway surfaces, but there aren't many off-airport ops and I don't remember any float or ski flying. A couple of exceptions in season 1 on the frozen river and ridge top in the C-180 were enjoyable.

Easy now! [-X

I do agree though, I'd like to see more off airport, real bush flying. I finally saw AK Wingman and thought that it was really good.

I noticed that Jim and Ferno left for vacation in the 180...but returned as passengers on the airline. I wonder what happened to the good old 180???

Gump which plane was yours?? Does a Hageland N6207 ring a bell? Near the end (06:31) of my 2005 slides it shows a white with blue Cessna of theirs in Unakaleet. This was from our Kelly River vacation up that way.

Damn,

All you people have cable, eh???? I pride myself on the fact that I buy avgas instead of cable.....

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Modern day "bush" flying has little to do with off airport ops. There are 135 operators that regularly do operate off airport, but the vast majority of "bush" operators work airport to airport only.

N7384U was a work plane of mine at Kotzebue for a couple of years or so. I'd have to look, but close to three thousand hours in her. High time airframe too, pushing 30K hours last I heard. It's been repainted, white with thin stripes down the side.

Very nice flying airplane and a really good heavy load hauler... But then a co-worker of mine smacked a treetop on my days off  And then, another co-worker was "teaching" his wife to fly in it, and sheared the gear off out by Kipnuk I think... Guess Hageland's bought it after that.

I'm betting we see the 180 show up with new engine and prop in later episodes. I remember Jim saying last season that he wanted a new engine, and in the opening credits when they show Ariel you can see the 180 in the background sporting what appears to be a polished spinner and three blade prop.

Re: Tweeto's On Tonight

glad to see both shows back... the Gold misfits for the entertainment value... first episode shows they got royally screwed by that Dakota guy... maybe some of you Alaska guys can update us on the outcome..last post from some of the Alaska people was the show was a big farce with them living in motels and such...maybe there's more to the screwing they got by losing their lease to the Dakota guy.... not sure I wouldn't be just a LITTLE mor pissed off than what they were in the first episode... I mean, work a whole summer, dig a 50 foot hole in the dirt and come up with a few ounces of gold... then when things start to look promising a guy comes in and says,,, get the F+++k out.....and they say OK lets leave with 80,000 bucks for our equipment and go look for another hole to dig".... and when Todd says he wants 80 grand for the equipment Dakota says,"that's a little more than WE, wanted to pay"... who is "WE" maybe the original plan the Owner had was to have a bunch of newby's do the work to get down to the gold and then throw them off and have easy pickins... I remember the guy across the creek once saying "don't believe anything the owner says".......

Re: Tweeto's On Tonight

I guess I look at it a bit different, Iceman.... I think that Todd was off screwing around, trying to expand (when they STILL have NO clue of what they're doing in the first place) and forgets to pay the bill.... they wouldn't have found an ounce if it hadn't been for Dakota Fred being there and holding their hand in the first place. The claim owner was getting sick of them making a mess and screwing around, getting absolutely nothing done...meaning he's getting nothing of a cut back from his claim... while he has to pay someone to babysit them. He was probably looking for a good reason to get them out of there and get someone in who could do something and get him some money while he's still alive. Ya snooze, ya lose! I've never seen such a cluster (I know that alot of it is for the TV...but still...) of misfits, egos and idiots! Didn't someone say MSHA had been in there and hammered them a bunch too??? Just watching the show, I can see thousands of dollars in MSHA violations every half hour.... and when you're dumb enough to let that be caught on camera.....
If it was me with that lease, I'd have been in close communication with the claim owner, letting him know what was going on all the time and how much they've learned....bet that would have made quite a difference.... but who knows? I call it "paying attention to business".
Then Todd gets all pissy about the millionaire not wanting to invest.... who in their right mind would want to have a dollar in that mess??? But, he heads out and bids waaay high on an old clapped out D9 for this new claim before he even knows he has any money.... luckily his friend found that 8L...much better machine and lower price....
Everyone is mad a the old guy and the claim owner....but from what I can see, Todd is the one that keeps dropping the ball at every corner.
All in all, it's not tough to see that it's alot of hype for TV, but still.......
Holy crap...I can't believe I'm that caught up in that show!!! hahaha.... I must be hard up for entertainment!!!

Re: Tweeto's On Tonight

I don't disagree with you at all... the entertainment in it is how Screwed up they were to begin with... the old man, meaning Jack was so gold fever bitten he wouldn't listen to anyone or any advice.... even when they had a guy in with a separator which worked beautifully he refuses to let anyone "touch my bucket".....and you're right about Dakota Fred.. but it seems if you're gonna cut them out it should have been done before they got up there and started work.. but then that wouldn't have played well on TV, they never listened to his suggestions so he goes and makes improvements to the shaker or something which prove correct... They spent money on bringing wives and Kids up there in the early episodes so you have kids, dogs, and women there, with bears and shit in the area... kids leaving food around and such... I wonder how much wasted money was tied up in air fares and food for unnecessary people at the mine...and if you're so close to getting gold as they said they were in the last episode before the winter break why are you up in the Klondike looking for another claim...I guess I missed the millionaire and dozer episodes or they haven't aired here yet...I bet the guy across the creek laughed himself silly every time he looked over there. But you gotta figure Discovery channel is paying at least some money to them for all this... I mean they kept saying how broke they were and were gonna lose their homes and such and lo and behold they're back at it for another season... somebody made a few bucks over the winter....

Re: Tweeto's On Tonight

Remember folks...this is a SHOW made for TV...may or may not be based on REALITY. I get a kick out of old Jack..he's always just about THAT far from the Motherload. I find it enertaining as I myself did some propecting in my younger years..actually found some gold & silver and developed my own process for extracting gold from quartz-bearing rock.

Re: Tweeto's On Tonight

I spent the summer around the crew! and yes they do stay at the hotel every night (Triple JJJ in Dawson City) and yes they are actors, sorry, well paid actors from what I'm told by the crew. And yes they dont know what they're doing and unfortunately ticking off a lot of real miners around the creek that they're on in Dawson right next to Stewart's claim...actually they are on one of Stuart's claim. Ahyhow, I'll spare the rest of the details as do not want to make them look as a bad apples as I was told by BCP members that they are very nice people, at least Todd and his father and that they run a strip down in OR/WA? And that stands for more than what I ear here where they're filming.... as someone said, its a TV show and afterall, no one would watch them if there wasnt a bit of "Dummy play" in it!

FWAK shows up one week later here but still cant wait to watch this year's first episode!

Re: Tweeto's On Tonight

of course.... I never doubted that there was much that was scripted and part of the "show"...there are too many things that just don't make sense and a normal person with real skin in the game would question before proceeding in the direction they did... I mean i even know that your sluice box should have riffles down the entire length of it... I did some panning and sluicing a few years back too and got some flour gold right here in San Diego county... it was fun....and if I had done it all day 6 days a week for the whole summer I would have come up with about a ounce or two at least so with all that equipment and shit they had for them to only come up with 2 ounces in Alaska, of all places, I had to laugh and say "are you kidding me""" I"ll bet they could have panned that much just working the stream but I don't know Alaska gold prospecting...maybe it's different up there....I guess Rob Burson has met them at their strip on Oregon and they are decent folks but if they're pissing off the local miners and such that's a different story...any way it IS entertaining in spite of what we here know about it but if I had my choice I'd rather be watching Ariel.. she's much easier on the eyes..... =D>
