Well that’s a rather underwhelming update [emoji53]
I was really hoping for an iPad Pro-like mini...

you and me both, like edge to edge screen would have been nice. But heh, I ordered one.

Re: New iPad Mini

Apple Pencil support alone is worth the upgrade.

Re: New iPad Mini

Been Waiting for this. My mini 2 is crashing occasionally using foreflight.

Now, how long for a Ram Mount ? Of course it wont fit the old one .

Have you seen the new "Robust iPad Mount" from Sporty's? I'll be getting one whenever a new iPad comes my way. Then I'll never need a new mount again, since this one works for the Mini through the largest Pro models...

Re: New iPad Mini

Anybody using an iPhone XS Max that can compare to the mini? 6.5" edge to edge, vs 7.9" cutout, smaller footprint on the panel. Considering buying just one new gadget instead of two. And how much memory do you need? Current 5S is only 16G and still fine, iPad is 32G and carrying worldwide Jepp FD plus FltPlanGo, plus a few Netflix videos to kill time.

New iPad Mini

I’ve got an iPhone XS Max and an iPad Mini 4. For me the iPhone is too small for primary use in my 182. I’ve got my iPad mini on a dash mount front and center (I only fly VFR) and have a Scoche magnetic mount on the yoke for my iPhone. I put the map on the iPad and just the Navigation Stats (Garmin Pilot) screen on my iPhone.

I was thinking Apple wasn’t going to update the mini and was preparing to upgrade to a full sized Pro. With this in mind, I moved the JPI down one hole and moved the altimeter over to the right so now there is enough room for a full sized iPad between the airspeed and altimeter.

I’m still on the fence about whether to upgrade to the mini 5 or get a Pro 11.

Re: New iPad Mini

I'm getting mine around April 4/5. I'll report back if it fits the existing Gizmo (in dash) mount or not. My guess is it will. I think it is the exact same case since they didn't change the screen to edge-edge- of course I could be wrong. But I never saw an announcement from Apple about this, I just spotted it on their website so I think it is like a 4.5 upgrade (better processor, better storage) not a full upgrade to a 5 or something like that. Still an important upgrade for those of us that us it for our nav screen.

Re: New iPad Mini

The Retina display will be the largest benefit to us I think, but i'm curious to hear how well it runs the various apps we care about. Storage is overkill if all you do is load up flight maps, but then again so is the processor power of a Pro model even with all of the options on. My Air 2 still runs Foreflight just fine and I'm not shy about enabling features, though it will produce more heat having to constantly render weather, glide maps, and so on. I'm pretty interested in the new Mini as a potential airplane-only device though. The Air 2 is sometimes a little too big for the cockpit, iPhone is a bit too small. I always felt the mini would be "just right", save the crappy non-Retina screen and dated chipset.

Re: New iPad Mini

My original Mini still works as a backup to my Mini 4, so I'm in no rush to get the Mini 5. I think I'd like to wait a little while to make sure that there aren't any undiscovered glitches with the new chip. But eventually I'll probably retire my Mini, and the Mini 4 will be the backup. The better screen should be a nice improvement, and the more robust battery will be nice, also. I don't know about the ability to use Apple Pencil, since I've never used it. I know that trying to use a stylus on the Mini 4's screen results in an unreadable mishmash--can't read my own writing!

As is the usual case with Apple products, my Mini is no longer upgradeable. so it's running an older iOS. It also has less storage, so I've removed everything from it except ForeFlight and what Apple won't allow me to delete. It is noticeably slower than the Mini 4, using ForeFlight, and every time I update ForeFlight, I get a message that it doesn't have enough storage capacity to do it, although somehow it does update anyway.

I have beau coup apps on my Mini 4, because in addition to using it as an EFB in the airplane, while traveling I use it much like a miniature laptop, with a nice Brydge keyboard Bluetoothed to it. It has 128 Gb storage, with more than 95 Gb still available. So yeah, 256 Gb is probably overkill, but 64 (the only other choice for the Mini 5) would be less than adequate, with lots of other apps on it, plus ForeFlight's update requirements.

I am glad, though, that the many rumors that the Mini was dead were unfounded. It's such a nice, handy size, especially as an EFB mounted to the yoke of my airplane.

Is it the same where you need to get a Cell version to have GPS coverage?

Yes, unless you use a Stratus, Stratux, or some other external GPS.

Re: New iPad Mini

Lack of borderless is a bit of a disappointment - it will probably take them 1-2 years before they fix this now on the mini, if ever.

A12 Processor is several times faster than a Mini 3 or 4 and very nice/welcome, it may help keep up with Foreflight's 3D updates and futureproof iPad for a few years.

I would have liked a borderless display--it would allow approach plates to be closer to actual size than slightly shrunk as now. I'm in no hurry to replace my Mini 4, so I'll wait for others to report whether the change in processing speed actually shows up in real world operation. It did make a difference when I went from my original Mini to my Mini 4.

Re: New iPad Mini

Got the iPad Mini 5 yesterday. Loaded up the software including Garmin Pilot and Foreflight and took it flying today.

I've got good news and bad news to report.

First the bad news. The GPS only works when there is strong cell connection, and even then it doesn't always work and when it does it doesn't work correctly, altitude is incorrect as in way off, and location is wrong and jumps around. I tested Pilot, Foreflight, and Apple Maps and then all experienced the same kind of behavior. I checked the 5 against my iPhone X and the X worked fine. I'll be calling Apple asap about this and I'll report back.

Now the good news, the case is the exact same as the 4 so it will fit everywhere the 4 does.

Re: DON'T BUY New iPad Mini 5

Phil, Buy a Bad Elf external GPS and that should make it perform better.
