We have any (Ford) Mustang guys here?

My wife wanted a classic Mustang since I've known her. Part of the deal after building my airplane was to get her one. After a few months of looking I found a pretty nice 64 1/2 with custom paint and a mildly build 302. It's a 10ft car and needs some attention to detail to bring it up to my specs. It has a few issues that I need some help with. Do we have any members here who are Mustang guros??

I used to know a tid bit about them when I was a little bit younger. My first project was almost a 1964 1/2 and my dad's hand me down was a 1967. What's your questions I will see if I can answer them?

That is a sweet looking 'Stang'! I was a Mustang nut many years ago. I've had 4 different ones and use to do a little amature racing with a couple of them. Always have had a soft spot for Mustangs. Not a 'guru' by any means but if I can answer a question I will.

A friend of mine was a Ford Dealer for a while. He also had a business restoring Mustangs and Shelby Cobras. They (he and his kids) started building Cobra parts and then the kids started Kirkham Motorsports which builds Cobra replicas. If he doesn't know something offhand I'm sure he has a book that will have anything you need to know. He just sold a semi trailer full of Mustang parts last year for nothing. I'll check with him but I can probably PM you his number.

Was I the only one that looked past the wife, past the mustang, past the Tacoma and saw the big tired Taco sitting in the garage? #-o

I don't know about mustang owners, but I do know we have a bunch of wheelers here. Do share! 8)

Good on you for getting your cute wife a cute car. =D> My wife has a list of cute things I need to buy her, I'm glad she's patient.

Nice Mustang.. My ex had one EXACTLY like that...... Did it come from Fla??? #-o

Also, it might just be a bad reflection but in the first pic it looks like it has disc brakes on the front wheels.

Re: We have any (Ford) Mustang guys here?

I have a 69 coupe. I bought it in 1978 when I was in high school from the widow of the man who ordered it new from Ford. It had 20,000 miles on it in 78. I had it 5 years and sold it, wished many times that I had the foresight to keep it but she was gone. Fast forward to 2003. I was flying the Scout to northern Maine to pick up some repair parts, and stopped to get gas in MIllinocket, Me. Across the street from the airport is a blue 69 coupe. After buying the gas and a soda, I wandered across the street to check it out in the owners yard. We chatted for awhile, he had owned it for 12 years. Opened the hood, and coulndt speak when I looked at the vin #. It was "my" old 69. Lump in the throat, and didnt let on it used to be mine. Tried to buy it that day, but the owner wouldnt sell. Stopped in 4 months later, still sitting there, still not for sale at any price. 6 months later the owner calls, he has lost his job, getting divorced, has to move out of his house, and has a OUI to deal with. The mustang is for sale, and I paid more than I should have. Been saving money since 04, and she has finally headed to recon. I dont have the spare time in my life to restore it, so it is at a resto guy who is considered one of the best in the business. He generally only works on high end Boss and Shelbys, but the economy has slowed a lot of that work and he has time for my old coupe. Its supposed to be ready for my sons wedding in Aug 2012. Its going to be some special to bring him to the wedding in the car his mom and dated in. Emery Pratt, Central Maine Mustang in Palmyra Maine can answer all your questions. Hes a great guy, and a real talent, but a long way from you.

You have a good looking stang.
I just finished this last weekend.

It's a 64.5 that had a 260 V8 and a C4 auto. It now has a cobra 5.0 and five speed, along with many other mods...

Re: We have any (Ford) Mustang guys here?

Sweet it seems airplanes and classic cars go hand in hand. Thanks for everyones replies! Here's a few of the small issues I'm having with the car.

The speedo is WAY off. This thing seems fast off the line and revs pretty high at 65mph on the GPS so I'm thinking the rear end may not be stock. I tried the ol driveshaft vs wheel turns truck and it was almost right at 2:1 which makes no sense as the lowest Ford rear end was 2.80:1. I want to get the speedo reading back somewhat to close and need to know what speedo gear to get to fix it. The tires are a little taller than stock too.

The next one is the 64 1/2 had a pressure switch for the brake lights. After a power disc brake conversion the stock pressure switch is obsolete. I want to convert it to a 65 plunger set up but there's about 4 different pedal set ups on all the Stang sites and been having issues getting a good parts list.

I posted this on Allfordmustangs.com the other good looking Mustang forum (Vintage Mustang Forums) requires a paying membership. Haven't gotten too much traffic there.

Thanks again for the replies.

MATT that rig you see is a 94 4-Runner with a solid axle swap, 37's, Marlin dual ultimate transfer case with a final drive of 223:1, detroits front and rear, hydro steering, the list goes on.

Did both tires turn the same direction with the rear end off the ground? I assume not since you only got 2:1. Lift ONE tire off the ground and put the transmission in neutral. Now, turn the tire and the driveshaft will spin at half the gear ratio (2.8:1 will be 1.4 driveshaft rotations per one tire rotation). It's easier if the rear is locked because with it jacked up both tires will spin the same direction, making it easier to count driveshaft rotations vs tire rotations.

This website has a calculator to aid you in getting the correct gear http://www.sccoa.com/faq/speedgr.html

I changed my brake switch when I added 2010 GT brakes by putting the switch on the pedal like 65s had. Ford used the same brake switch in mustangs until at least 93, so you should be able to get one pretty easily :) All you need to do is cut the brake switch wiring on the inside of the firewall for the original pressure switch and add connectors for your new switch. The switch is a bolt on mod and requires no drilling of the brake pedal.

Re: We have any (Ford) Mustang guys here?

I like Mustang's..... Just never owned one.... I do, however, have a distant cousin.... I own a 1969 Mercury Cougar coupe and a 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7.... Unfortunately, both cars are in dire need of restoration and neither are road worthy at the moment.... My dad also has a fully restored 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente and a 1941 Ford Pickup in line to get restored.

http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ seems to be a good outlet for parts and custom components... They have Cougar parts and I have been eying a bunch of stuff that I need....

Here are the last pictures I have of our Ford powered classics....

I've always liked Mustang's, too. When I was in high school a few years ago ( :^o :^o ), our neighbor did a complete frame up restoration of a Mustang (forgot what year  ). Came out very awesome. He kept it all stock.
