What batteries are you guys running?

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

What batteries are you guys running?

I have a 1962 182E. Mine just needs to be replaced and absolutely sucks after sitting in the cold for a few days. i normally have to hook it up to a car to start unless it is over 60 degrees. Is there a battery upgrade I can do? What is the best battery out there? I cant stand having to go through the process of hooking it up to a car, especially when weather is rolling in and you need to take off immediately.

Re: What batteries are you guys running?

On my 182B I pulled it and the box from the back of the plane. Got a battery box and little dry type battery that is stc'd for the plane and mounted it on the fire wall. This is the second 182 I have done it to and I would do it again. Also pulled out all that battery cable. Forgot what the total weight savings was.

That said, I would not recomend it to sombody that had a perfectly good battery. Oh, that is right, your battery is junk so you are a perect candidate.

Who sells these kits? I like being able to get to it without taking the cowl off though. And my plane it already so no heavy that I actually like the battery back there, helps me get a good full flare.

I have heard (herd):D that the 62, 63, and 64 are the hardest 182's to flair. Get an ammo box and fill it with gold coins and mount it in the back. :D

Re: What batteries are you guys running?

Might do that kit you did and put the extended baggage in. Ive heard good things about those. And I can keep my took kit and survival kit far back in the tail and help that flare out. And yeah, my plane is super hard to fully flare. ive had some hard flat short field landings when im by myself and no weight in the back. just simply run out of elevator.

The 56 to 61 182 had a fully trimable horizontal stabilizer like the 180 and 185. 62 was the first year without it (do have the wider cabin though).

Get the extended bagage for sure.

Yes it does, and perhaps a tad more with removal of the old box and associated wires.

With that much weight loss you can afford to do the extended baggage, and as you noted put something of value where that dead weight battery now resides...

this is that exact setup (although on a 180):

Re: What batteries are you guys running?

I have the setup like Rob on our 180. I think I got it from Atlee Dodge, and it came with the STC. I have mine mounted at an angle, so the battery can just be slid out, without unbolting the box.

I bought a new Concorde RG and ran it for 5 years, always spun that starter motor with a fury even after months of inactivity.

Re: What batteries are you guys running?

Concord RG in my straight tail 182. Cranks like crazy... even with a voltage drop to 9.9.
Starting is all about current, not voltage. My opinion is the plane started fine (all over America) since the late 50's with the battery in the back.
Why change it? STC...? Remove the cowl to check it? Problems flaring to land? 34 lbs.? So what, the 182 is a load hauler.
Go online and check Chief aircraft supply. They did not increase prices in January like Spruce did. Free UPS shipping. GET a Concord.
I think your winter starting blues will go away like a day on the beach in Hawaii.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Concorde RG35-AXC or something like that. The end of battery issues for me-

Re: What batteries are you guys running?

You can put a Concorde 10million back in the tail.... with 15 feet of 40+ year old cables you are not going to get the same power, longevity, weight loss (read: more load you can haul if that blows your skirt up) or added value, as you would changing over to this set up when the option presents itself. Look at the picture again and look how short the cable runs in the modern glass mat battery are...

This is not rocket science. Unless you simply can't spring the couple hundred extra bucks this mod makes sense. Most A/C mods are very subjective, this one is a no-brainerd...

34#s and so what?... I strive to cut much lesser weighing stuff out of my airplane if it's not needed. If 34#s means nothing to you than neither will this mod #-o

Re: What batteries are you guys running?

I had a Concord 35 type sealed. Was in the plane when I bought it and I removed it and moved the battery forward w/the Burls batt box & the Oddesy SBS-J16. It cranked slow but I think it was 54 y/o cable & lugs that was the problem the battery was at least 1.5 yrs old when I bought the plane, total 4 yrs. I lightened up by 38 lbs after taking out the box battery and cable and put back in 16.5 lbs back on the firewall. I also lightened up my checking account by $400 by the time I bought all of the aforementioned goodies and spent about 6 hours taking out and installing.

That dinky little Odyssey SBS-J16 battery? The PMA'd one that saves 8 lb over the Concord RG-25 and cranks way faster? Oh, Okay! =D>

Re: What batteries are you guys running?

BCP member 182STOL offers a very good battery upgrade featuring the sealed "Odyssey" type battery. This battery issue was the subject of some discussion on this forum a month or two ago. 182STOL's kit is apparently a bit more expensive than some other options, but this is because his battery mount is physically stronger, higher quality, and is mounted better. Apparently it is also a much easier installation process, so it may cost equal or less when you consider shop time. If quality is a big part of your equation, you might look into his setup. I've sat in his airplane and seen personally how much stronger it cranks over than a stock setup. It's a big improvement. On a cold day way out in the boondocks, my guess is that it is a very worthwhile thing to have.

I made the swap a couple of months ago and have no regrets.

Same for me. My Savannah has a Yuasa which is often dead (yes, northern Italy can be cold too: I'm close to the Alps). I suspect that there is a problem with it, anyway. To cut the story short, I mounted in the cockpit a plug to use an external power source (I use a car booster: light and much less compicated than driving the car close to the plane).

Ciao,
