Been in the land brokerage/investment business in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska for 30 years, seems like only yesterday when I started. Grew up on a farm in north Nebraska and started flying a C150-checking center pivot irrigation systems when I was 15. Bought a C-175 in 1977 and still have it, converting it to a Lyc. 0-360 and horton stol/back country type airplane over the years. Have collected another C-175, J-3, C-180 and M20D Mooney over the years. Use them all to view and show property, as you guys know you can see/show so much more from the air. Been good-probably better than I deserve. Great wife and kids make it seem so.

ISC: I think we work for the same company. I'm based in ORD

Gump: The eye rollers can be explained with proper 5% rule application.

Denali: Most airline guys are polar opposites from airline management. They are dead against user fees....it's the CEOs not the pilots who push for this stuff. Have not met one pilot (owner or not) that's in favor of user fees. The reason you don't hear them vocally oppose it is because their voices are gone from vocally opposing the job related mountain of bull$%t

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

I am currently a Home Technician until we move back to the Great US of A in May!

Then I go back to a flying job. Thank goodness because chasing 2 youngins around for 3 years is a REAL job!

You are a little late Doc. I have had that exam, biopcy, radiation seed bit, 5 years of fighting with the FAA to keep my 3rd class, and finally have a good bill of health from all concerned. I wouldn't wish those years on my worst enemy. But if any of you guys are 50 or there abouts, you really do need to get a base line going. Then they will know if something is going on in that area. It is best if treated early on. Bob

Well put Bob, it's all about prevention. It's a small thing that can make a big difference; and BTW screening should start at 50. Oh yeah, and it's "biopsy" not biobcy, but that was a pretty good try for a pilot. Glad to hear you and your PPL survived the ordeal.

I thought paying for that kind of treatment was illegal in most states
I guess it comes down to whether one enjoys it or not.

My day job? Professional computer
eek. A few years back I finally got a job with a company I wasn't expecting to would go belly up in two weeks. I finally decided I was secure enough to splurge some and pursue flying.

Gotta admit, the partnership I'm in has kept costs pretty low and rarely do we have any scheduling conflicts. I think I got lucky on this one. The annual on the 150 just came in at under $600. Not a path for everyone and definite downsides. I'd like to own my plane someday, but it's working out well for now.

Patrol Guy,

What sort of requirements do they look for to get a job flying the pipelines?
I imagine that type of work is hard to find.

P.S. You have a great set of photos there. Really enjoyed them.

teach to fly

I have had a goodly number of jobs and one career, as a high school teacher. Now retired, I am substituting several days a week to afford my plane and flying.

I used to dream of being professional pilot like my dad; who did it all in the old days, from instruction and crop dusting through WWII and finally an airline pilot.

There is something about flying... the endlessness of the sky... the view of the world below... the horizon looming ahead... I still enjoy every flight and look forward to the next...

I've been doing a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test every year for years. It's worth the extra dough on top of the First Class and EKG. Just do it, folks.

That 5% may be increasing. I flew with a bunch of them, and considered their attitude towards the profession in general, and their disdain towards those within the profession outside their specific demographic group to be an insult. The name on their baggage crew tag should say, "ME".

Hey JC,

I have a couple of friends that live in your area. One lives about 4 miles from Kobelt (N45). And the other is just north of the airstrip. They keep there Beech Sierra at NA45. Nice little airstrip with great food at the bar & grill! I drive a racing transporter for a motorcycle company in CA. I moved to Idaho about 2 years ago and I'll do my best to never move again! It's a shame that I still have to go down to the rat race in L.A. often though. Idaho has been a perfect fit for me and it sound like it would be perfect for you too. I keep my plane at Caldwell, and like some others had mentioned, with in an hours flight you can be in the mountains fishing, hiking, hunting, etc. The Owyhee's is just a short flight too with lots of fun flying!! I'm sure as an electrician, you should be able to find work in the Boise area. The quality of life is really great here in Idaho too! Every time I get off that plane at BOI from L.A., it's like a breath of fresh air! Good luck on your future endeavor's.

Hi Pat.

Yeah I fly to Kobelt every once in a while. Its just over the river. Nice little airport and quiet usually. Haven't eaten there yet but will make a point of stopping there for lunch next chance I get.

Thanks for the info. ID sounds real nice. I'm going to have to do some exploring there, too.

I wish I could get back all those wasted hours sitting in rush hour traffic.

That is a lot of time that could have been spent knee deep in a stream or flying into some backcountry strips.

Can't afford to waste much more of it. Life's too short.

A good name for those who fly only when paid is one that's been round a while "Prostitute", think about it.
