Re: What to buy, what to buy

This is a fantastic lesson Dirtstrip. I did not know about the gross weight change on the CH-701. Rick mentioned the weight sensitivity when I conversed with him about his experience with his. There is no free lunch. It's too bad that Zenith has a closed forum over there. No doubt, the folks there have been following this particular airplane with some interest. Again, thanks.

I had the early CH701, by early I mean it was rated for 960 lbs gross and the standard engine was the Rotax 582. Later, when Zenith adopted the 912 for their engine of choice, the weight limit was increased to 1100 to accommodate it. I think the design change was only a reinforced wing with some extra ribs. What you need to ask is if this is the 960 gross model. The year is stated as 97 but that is not the kit production year but the manufacture year, meaning the year it was completed by the builder. If it is a 960 gross model with a 912 added then you are up against a tighter useful load. My 701 was 520 empty with the 582 (110 lbs installed) and large tires. It held 15 gallons of fuel. The 1100 lb models with a 912 usually had two 10 gallon wing tanks for 20 gal.

Here is how mine looked: 960 lb - 520 = 440 and with 15 gal. gas = 90 lb dropping it to 350 lbs. To use the 960 gross model and repower with the 912 (140 lbs installed) then you lose an additional 30 lbs and now can haul only 300. Obviously this would not work for everyone to carry a passsenger. But could be ok for the pilot and some gear. It is also why I repowered with the Simonini in my older 701, it was the same weight as the 582 but 92 hp. The plane with the extra weight of the 912 will fly just fine and will handle a little over gross fine too but beware that you are tight going into the deal and be sure to know it before signing the dotted line.

If it is the 1100 lb gross model then it would be great, but if it is not then it explains why the plane has been for sale so long.

Also mine made 75- 80 on a good day and flew a little nose high. With a heavier engine I would expect it to lower the nose some and add to the cruise. Small changes are big on this plane.

I got the serial # from FAA. I called Zenith. It's a 960 gross weight airplane. :(

Re: What to buy, what to buy

Don't know if all this makes a difference in your decision but looking at my post again the final number should be 320 available for pilot and passenger instead of the 300 I punched, that is if it has 15 gallon tanks as mine did. But if the builder has increased fuel capacity to 20 gallons like the later 701, then the additional 5 sets it back another 30 lbs from the 320 and puts it down to 290. Essentially a single place with a big baggage compartment. The choice is to leave out some fuel, which you could easily do because the fuel burn on a 912 is probably a third less to half (?) of the 582.
5-6 gal/hr was not uncommon with the 582.

I could be wrong but with the external fuel tank to one side on that plane, it looks like it would fly crabbed.

All that lift comes at a price. Drag. My friends 701 burns 4 to 5 GPH at cruise. He is on this forum. 701der. I'm sure he would be glad to talk to you if you PM him.
The increase gross is from more than wing ribs. There are some cross brace additions as well.

Good-Bad-or indifferent, that is what my cub does-about 75+ mph on 4.5 or so mpg. It has a 90 hp with a 'seaplane' (climb) prop. I expect for the 701 to get by being that 'functional' looking it must out perform my cub by quite a bit during TO and LNDG..... :)

Not sayin' I don't like the looks.....
It is just kind of an 'acquired taste'.

With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

Re: What to buy, what to buy

Too many good aircraft on this side of the country to drag one back from WV. The factory demo Sky Raider II is for sale for $14500 but it has a 582 in it.(add 3500 for the custom trailer) There is another new one with zero hours WITH a trailer for 24K. It is in San Diego. It has a NEW Jabiru. There is a Decent S-6 in Denver with a 100 horse 912. You can fly it home in a long day or two short hops for the mid 20's.
It is still a buyers market. No need to chase across the country.

OK Here's another idea. There is a Titan II with a 912 for 22500 in McGill NV. Not sure how close that is to Sparks. I have flown the Titan II and it is a riot. A mini fighter. Can't beat the visibility and it is fast. 120 cruise. 35 stall. It has a low hour 912 on it and it is in annual.
So many choices. Shoppings is half the fun. Shopping with other peoples money is even more fun.
