Re: Whats Up with the Bacon Strip???

Rick,
Max drove thru there about a month ago and talked to the owner, all is the same. Just be careful if they got rain the dry lake bed may not be so dry last year I over flew and the east end was pretty wet. I was out east of 29 Palms (yesterday) on Cadiz Lake bed and it was raining but not really enough to be a problem. When you going? Remember according to Ranger Dick there are only 3 dry lake beds you can land on down here

Care to share which ones? I've been meaning to figure out the whole dry lakebed thing down here in socal. Any recommendations or things worth doing / seeing? Any camping or - better yet - fly in hunting to be done (chukar?)?

Re: Whats Up with the Bacon Strip???

I got this picture from the Bacon Strip Ranch Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bacon-Strip/146875161995670
It appears this sign is for the Off-Roader types, not pilots.

Comment about the sign from the Bacon Strip Ranch.
..........These signs are more of an effort to keep the off-roader's vehicles from tearing up the ground where the airplanes taxi before the fence is finished. It's also a little CYA...I've heard that it's hard to legally go after the "bad" trespassers if you haven't posted these signs

Ranger Dick was more interested in flexing his badge than doing his job and telling us where we could have fun, i mean recreation. There are plenty of DLB's to land on that are legal. there are some out in Lucerne Valley, Barstow area ect.

Re: Whats Up with the Bacon Strip???

Hi everybody. Sorry for the late response but the Bacon Strip is still around and in the process of becoming better than ever before. Recent battles with Mother Nature, bankruptcy court, and doctors reports have dealt some serious blows to the ranch in recent months. But with the help of all of you who visit and make the ranch what it is, progress is happening in 2012.

The "Bar" roof is expected to be re-built before the annual fly-in in October. More permanent tie-down spots with fire pits are planned before the end of the year.

As always, feel free to fly-in anytime and enjoy the desert. No reservations required. Firewood is getting a little scarce so you might need to bring some in :)

I look forward to hearing your fly-in stories.

Re: Whats Up with the Bacon Strip???

I'm planning on visiting BSR this Sunday. I see from weather history here http://www.wunderground.com/history/air ... .html?MR=1
that there has been little rain in the last month. This history from Barstow, Ca seems like it would be close enough.
Is it safe to say that the lake bed/ strip should be in good condition?
Has anyone been recently?

Thanks,
Phil

Re: Whats Up with the Bacon Strip???

Hi Phil,

There has been some recent precipitation history at or near the Bacon Strip but I was out there last Saturday and it was dry and useable and I don't think there has been any rain since then. And there is no rain in the forecast leading up to Sunday so I'm sure you will have great conditions if you decide to fly-in.

Have fun!

If somebody in the SoCal area wants to donate a pickup load of firewood and not too far out of the way for me, I'll haul it in to the BSR. I'm open this weekend or next Sunday (March 4).
