Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

Glad you two were able to work out a deal-- kind of a win/win for both of you. I saw Ernie last week, he said your brother or someone was gonna be picking up the engine soon. What are you gonna use for a prop? There's usually several McCauley props on BS in the C180 dept, some of which might be suitable for your IO360.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

My brother picked it up last Saturday and he's headed here for Christmas. I'm going to use an 82" C203. Found one locally a guy removed to install a 88". Has 3000TT 1300SOH and he wants $2500. Seems like a reasonable deal so I'll probly buy it.

Looks like some really good progress. Have you caught yourself making airplane noises in the shop yet?

Don't wanna rain on your parade but I wouldn't be too quick to buy that one, esp if you're not in a hurry. I sold the old 82 I had to a guy on this site for $1200, and have seen them for around that price elsewhere (like maybe barnstormers) also. Maybe check with some prop shops to see if they have any reasonably priced trade-ins.

I hear ya and I am not in a hurry at all. I don't think it is a great price but it is local, I can put my hands on it and I can read through the logs. I'm pretty sure the blades were replaced at the last overhaul and they look really good.

That mount is looking good. You might want to read some of the threads on C180/182/185 seaplane mounts, and think about adding some of the extra tubing they beef them up with when you get it all done.
They'll add weight but should cut down on vibration and stress.

That's a good idea. I don't think the horizontal and vertical tubes at the firewall are necessary but I'll look and see what other tubes they add.

Are you putting any down thrust in your mount ? I feel your pain on "one off" mounts. I built mine in 2003 when you couldn't mouse click and have one on the way to the house. I like the O-360 Continental. My dad wore out four of them on a Cessna 337. My best friend is building a hot rod Swift with one. Parts are not cheap.

Look at the mount on an RV, and that's only a 4 cylinder on a (+\-) 1000 lb plane.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

Not putting in any down thrust. I'm setting the engine along the thrust line Bob designated in the plans.

That is quite the mount on the RV. I note that the main landing gear attach to the mount so it does need to be quite beefy.

I don't think the extra tubes at the firewall are necessary because the mount bolts to horizontal and vertical tubes that make up the airframe structure behind the firewall.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

Are you putting a tube from the lower firewall attach point to the front motor mount biscuit area similar to all the Continental mounts?

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

Yes, I just haven't got it on yet. It lays at a really shallow angle so I'm somewhat concerned but I ran the numbers at it should be fine.

To the untrained eye, the Bearhawk looks very similar to a Maule. What thrust-line does Maule put in their engine mounts? I'm also curious as to whether the firewall attach points are similar between the Maule & the Bearhawk. Building your own is great, but after reading all about thrust-line mods etc I'm starting to think that engine mounts are sort of a black art like props. Sure be nice if you could just buy one with all the right measurements & bolt her on.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

The Patrol uses 1 degree of down thrust. Building mounts is not difficult if you are already building the rest of the airplane. It's one of those measure thrice cut once jobs. Lots of plumb bob and jig work. As far as buying a mount, sometimes things that are "factory" don't fit well. I have cut a super cub mount from a known supplier to fit a stock Piper fuselage. I have a few photos of my mount I managed to load in my gallery but I need further tutoring on posting to a thread, I didn't grasp Zanes pictorial on doing so.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

On Bearhawk 357 with the Landrover motor we had to lower the thrust line 1 1/2 ". Bob said that was ok but we had to keep the angle zero/zero. On my c175 with the LS3 I am setting it up with 3.5 degrees down and zero sideways the same as the 185 but I am installing it with shims under the mounts so I can change it if required.

Go to "me", click on "my photos", click on "kevin's photos", click on the photo you want, click "image url", then copy and paste that email address into your post. Then add
[img]
at the beginning of the address, and
[/img]
at the end.

PITA, and maybe there's a better way, but that's how I do it.

Thanks. I tried all that stuff and when I hit preview I get nothing so I must be doing something wrong. I watched Zane's picture posting video a few times but he zips through it pretty fast as he is a computer dude and I'm not so I'm lost almost immediately. Not a computer engineer here, just a fabricator that likes to share and lean from others but when they make posting pictures hard it's game over for me pretty quick. Sorry to drift your thread whee.
