Thanks Jo! I'm not sure how it would look for the manager of the Polaris shop to go riding with a guy on a Arctic Cat wearing MF gear 8)

Sure it would...say get out an old 500 Indy and a sled to carry Arctic Cat repair parts and tools.... On a side note....I've been told...buying an Arctic Cat is grounds for divorce...

Duke used to fly with me pretty regularly and the seating is arranged so he will fit in the BH with the family but he's a big dog so unfortunately I doubt we'll be able to take him on camping trips with the family.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

Had to fit the firewall and boot cowl so we could cut a new instrument panel.

Haven't nailed down the panel layout but I thinking something like this...maybe.

We will probly ditch the 430 and go with a Garmin GTR200 or a Icom A220. The T&B won't get install unless we decide we want one. All the switches and the key will go on the far left.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

I know your plan is just for VFR flight, but I'd stick an attitude reference in there. I've got a TruTrack ADI and love it. Found mine used for pretty cheap (included the backup battery). You might could do the same.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

Looking great! 430 is a waste unless you're going IFR certified.

Can't say enough about the GTR200. For me, it's a bit more user friendly than the A220. Better squelch as well IMO. The standby chanel monitoring feature is a must have!

The GRT Sport EX is my primary attitude indicator. In my mock-up I'm using the engine display because that is how I plan to use it most of the time. If I decide I want a attitude reference I can flip to this screen:

Glad to hear a good report about the GTR200. It looks like a great radio. I agree about the 430 but eventually I want to get my IFR rating so I'm trying to make sure I have room for the necessary equipment.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

Whee - did you remake your panel because you wanted it a little taller? I can appreciate that, if so.
For self-evient reasons, Bob's panel wasn't sized for modern large-screen avionics. Most fit, but it's tight.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

The original panel we cut forced the boot cowl into a shape I don't like, it had slight flat spots near the door post. The new panel will be the same height as in the plans but is shaped so the boot cowl curves more smoothly. There is really just a tiny difference. The 7" GRT Sport fits the panel quite well.

Not much to report. My dad has been working on the door panels and fuel lines.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

So I have a question about skinning the doors... How did you figure out where to drill the holes in the outer skin to ensure you hit the centerline of the tubing for the door? I'm having a dickens of a time figuring that out on my Bearhawk Patrol.

Re: Whee's Bearhawk Project...progress.

If you want to be right on the centerline of the door frame tubes I think the best way is the drill the door tubes first then use a match drill jig to drill the aluminum skins.

The way we did it was lay the frame on the outside of the skin, trace the outside edge of the frame then measure in half the diameter of the tube and draw another line. We then clamped the skin and frame together as they would be when finished and drilled along the second line. We weren't worried about having them exactly on the centerline.

Well, DOH! Not sure why I didn't think of drilling the frames and using the match-hole drill jig... Guess I know what I'm getting myself for Christmas!
