I am flying accross Wisconsin. I would like to camp on a grass strip that sells fuel. Fuel is optional. A cool Grass strip to camp on in mid wisconsin is the goal. Looking for ideas. See you dawgs at Johnson creek in a few weeks too!

Try central county east of Iola. They cater to fly-in camping. They have bathrooms and showers, water on the campsite, and cut firewood if you want a campfire. If you get there on any Friday they have an all you can eat lunch for usually around $10. If you need supplies there is an convenience store a half mile down the road, and a bar with pretty good food next door to the store. There is no fuel on site but you are within 10 minutes of several airports with services. The guys that base there are a real good bunch and will talk your ear off if you give them a chance. The identifier is 68C. They have a pretty good web site under Central County Flyer Association. There's a link on the AirNav website too. When I lived in Wisconsin I tried to get to the friday lunch at least once a month. They do this all year long except during Oshkosh. Bring bug spray during the warm weather. There is marshy areas around the field. You'll see deer and I've had herons stand right next to the runway and watch me go by.

Anyone know anything about Blair Lake? It's in the middle of a very cool area and doesn't seem to have any structures nearby, but it's marked as private in the FAA logs.

How about other north woods strips?

Old post I know but I got hung up due to weather departing Oshkosh this past summer and stumbled upon a beautiful little airport with a gorgeous grass strip. Look up Y51 in Viroqua, WI. Great spot, nice folks, courtesy car, nice town. I'd go back.

Viroqua is really close to the family farm. I'll have to check them out.

Ours isn't a super rustic airport but we do have self serve fuel, mechanic services, a courtesy car and a nice little town at KRRL (Merrill, WI). By the end of 2013 we will also have a really nice brand new FBO building.

I'm going back to WI for a month or so this summer and, since it's my first summer with the Maule, I thought I'd bump this thread and see if anyone else had ideas. One that isn't already mentioned is Three Lakes Municipal (40D). It's got a nice approach over one of the lakes, a campground that shares a property line and a couple restaurants and bars to choose from.

Anyone else have one?

I have not been able to find it, but I recall a vintage inspired airport in Wisconsin with old hangars/etc. I think maybe lodging and camping. Possibly a private airport.. Not EAA's pioneer airport.

I will keep hunting unless anyone has ideas of what I am talking about.

You may be thinking of C37 Brodhead? Maybe not, but this is a great little airport. Has three runways, all grass, gas is available and I am not sure about the status year round, but they have bathroom facilities with showers in the EAA hangar next to the pavilion. And wifi!

My dad and I go out there every year or two for the annual Pietenpol/Hatz Flyin the weekend before Oshkosh. Its a great time with lots of cool planes based there and many that come in for the gathering.

Kevin, you gonna be home for the summer? If so we should go flying.

Nope, but that does look cool. This place I remember seeing somewhere was 1 strip, with vintage styled hangars and tree lined. I may of just been dreaming of such a place

Nope, but another sweet airport. All to cool flying in Wisconsin! I miss flying around there. I used to live in Wisconsin and northern ill. Got my license 20 years in Poplar Grove / Belveder IL.

I might be making something up in my head I saw one night surfing with the beer or whiskey in hand.

You might be thinking of Log Cabin Airport near Mondovi, WI? It fits the description at least.
