I am in the market for a 170B. I'm finally potentially able to buy one, and I am an A&P that works at a GA maintenance shop. So I'm looking for an off market flyable project for my family. This is NOT to flip. This is for me to get into one that may be more reasonably priced and upgrade as able. Looking for a 1953-55 year model with good bones. Higher time engine doesn't bother me if flown. Interior, paint, avionics, none of that matters. It just needs 4 seats and if any damage history, properly documented and executed repairs don't bother me either. I'm located in Nashville TN but obviously willing to talk to anyone in the US. Budget for a project 170B is about $50-60K Thanks!

Would also consider a 172TD or a 175TD, but I doubt those would be in my price range...

I wish you luck! While I like the 170B, an older straight tail 172 can probably be much easier found in the budget you listed. I realize that you might be able to find a flying 170 for that price, but guessing it will definitely be a flying project especially after the AOPA sweepstakes plane was heavily written about. The prices on 170's has gotten astronomical! Friend just sold his for $180K!! Granted it had an O-360, but that's nuts in my opinion.
The 172 will do 99% of what the 170 will do and you can always convert it to a TW if that is your desire. Plus, you'd probably have less invested in the end.
I get the attraction of a TW, having owned a few. But I also see the benefit of having a nose wheel on those 20+kt crosswind landings.
