0-300 172 on floats?

Hey all, I’ve got a low time 172G with an 0-300. Fresh paint with the interior and panel removed for refurbishing. I’ve got all of the parts to make it a 172 seaplane, and am looking to do it. With long lakes, no backseat, and removed unnecessary avionics and interior parts, would this be a decent floatplane for two people with full fuel? Probably putting it on Edo 2000s, and eventually would put a 180HP on it or upgrade to a Cessna 180.

A friend of mine used to rent one just like that. It was a great little float plane for what it was. I'd say go for it!!

My 0-300 hasn’t let me down yet but I have some friends to carry the extra "necessities" for me

So do you drag people around on the SPLASH ZONE with that 170? Looks like that could be a hoot!

Re: 0-300 172 on floats?

Why not? The airplane will teach you to fly floats. At max weight, it'll make you work at it, but with a bit of practice, you'll be a better float pilot than most.

Then, when you put a 180 hp engine on it, you'll have a smile a mile wide. Keep it light and simple.

I have 160hp 172 seaplane and it’s really a great performer up to gross weight. I have what became the sportsman leading edge cuff... changes the whole airplane.

In the situation you're describing I'd say do it for sure. Float flying is a blast.

If you have all the structure components and an opportunity to have them installed the added value to the airframe alone is worth the effort even if you have no intention of indulging yourself

Looks like the SPLASH ZONE pic was swapped out.

Re: 0-300 172 on floats?

The 172 will be a great way to get started, you will learn much about OAT temps, use of winds, water handling and it may in the end be all you need for some great budget minded float flying. The addition of the structural float provisions will be easily recovered in increased hull value should you decide move on.
