0470R Oil spiral ring failure
Lycoming, Continental, Hartzell, McCauley, or any broad spectrum drive system component used on multiple type.
Is it just bad luck or......
Recently I have had two oil spiral ring failures on two different 0470R engines in two different C182's. What are the chances of that? One engine was within 5 hours of a cylinder change, the other 350 hours SMOH. Both failures made a mess of oil pumps and bearing journals.
The professionals (engine shops) are not providing answers.
Can someone provide some insight into this kind of failure?
Thank you in advance
Bruce

Do you think the gap was correct when they were installed. Does seem like a fluke thing.

Considering the money I paid for these professionals to do it, I would hope so, but of course there is no way for me to be absolutely certain.

I had it happen on my 0-470 R in my 182, 9 years ago. The way I discovered it was, I was getting ready to fly home from the island where I was working at 9:pm on a cold November night, and I had no oil pressure at start-up.
The cylinders were ECI's, and the warranty department treated me well. They paid for a complete overhaul.

I forgot to mention that the next day, I found a couple little pieces of the ring in the oil pressure relief valve.
