Re: 182 enroute to the islands...

I done a few ocean crossings, but not anymore. The ferry companies can do it cheaper, or I containerize them, like this damaged Twin Otter I got out of Borneo:

My most trying long crossing was with a Caravan from Caracas to Mogadishu. Did it in 4 days. It was the first time I flew a Caravan, so I was pretty well checked out by the time I got to Africa. It was when GPS was just coming out. I used a Trimble Transpak, which gave a fix every 6 hours or so, with only 3 satellites up. Since it was a rush job, we didn't have extra tanks, did it with internals only by going up to 21,000' and stopping in Greenland. While going over the icepak on Greenland, the mechanic looked out at the gale force winds on the ice and asked: "so what happens if the engine quits?" "We die'" I replied.

The closest we came to dying on that flight was when the mechanic was trying to figure out the marine toilet we brought along. He couldn't figure out why it was rolling around. Well we where up at 21K, so it had pressurized air in it since he used it last at low altitude as we where climbing out. Naturally, he tried pulling the slide open to see what was wrong. I heard a wump from the back. I looked back to see him covered with that blue crud, with a corresponding human shaped outline on the headliner. I laughed so hard almost lost the plane.
