182 extended baggage

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

182 extended baggage

I have a 182L, will the older 180 extended baggage's fit? I have the firewall battery so if I put in the one for it, itll have a big hole where the battery should be.

182 extended baggage

No, 182E and newer are 4” wider than 180/185. Also, Cessna factory extended baggage are built for the battery still in the tail.

Extended baggage kits which drop down as low as the floor are all aftermarket. It seems some minor modifications would make them work in a wide body 182.

Selkirk has an extended baggage for the late model 182 but it’s made for the stock battery location as well.

Re: 182 extended baggage

I installed an extended baggage in my buddy’s 182P, as Halestorm said, it has a cut out for the stock battery configuration. Selkirk may be able to work with you on a one-off kit if you could get the approval. I personally would consider it a minor modification to the STC and install it as such, if I could get the part made that way from Selkirk.

You'll save a lot of weight moving that battery. Selkirk is an inexpensive option and looks great!

That ext baggage looks awesome!
Is there a hole in it for the battery box?
If so, seems pretty simple to just patch it.
Then use Dodge's STC'd firewall battery box.

Re: 182 extended baggage

Where's your ELT? Because of the later guidance requiring VERY solid mounting of the ELT, I chose to cut a hole in my extended baggage, put a hinged door on it, and mount the ELT under that, running reinforcements front to back between ribs to stiffen the mounting. Worked great, got the ELT out of the way, VERY solidly mounted, and well protected from stuff in the aft baggage.

Seems you could do the same with that hole for the battery that you've already moved.

My 182, and I believe many 182, already suffer from a nose heavy condition making the battery move not quite the slam dunk it is with 180/185.

It is VERY easy to get a VERY solid mounting aft of the extended baggage or even on the roof above the extended baggage. Not hard at all with some added stringers and a doubler.

Re: 182 extended baggage

With my 182F I decided the extended baggage just wasn't worth it. I have the battery, the ELT and the pump for my amphib gear in there and by the time I work around it there won't be any room for stuff.

I was also advised against the firewall battery because of the tendency to be nose heavy.

Sure like seeing those photos of the pimped out 182s. Gorgeous.

I was going to have them mount the ELT to the fuse, and stuff the survival gear in the back, its about 25lbs or so total so it cancels out some of the moment from the firewall battery, I removed all the the vacuum equipment and standby vacuum pump so I wouldn't be surprised if I lose some " off the front.
