1946 Champ 7ac/dc on floats?

Does anyone have any opinions about a 7AC/DC, 85 hp on 1300 EDOS? How would it perform? Would it carry 2?

Thinking of looking at one for sale this weekend.

Thanks, Airpix

It has two seats. Its type certificated for two. You can look at the Weight and Balance certificate and determine whether or not it can LEGALLY carry two.

If you keep it at or below maximum certificated gross weight, it will carry whatever you can get in it at that weight, just fine.

It will not get in and out of 1200 foot long ponds.

Great little airplanes. Get someone who is an EXPERT (emphasize, emphasize) on wood wing Champs to take a GOOD LONG look at those wing spars. That can be an expensive gotcha.

Did my float rating in a 7AC with a 90 HP on 1300's. Instructor and I (180 each), 20 gallons, and it did OK. This was a non-electric champ. I then owned a 7AC wth a 115HP on PK 1500s, that was way better. If you're just going to tool around on floats mostly by yourself, it should do the job. On a warm day you'll need some water. MTV is right about the wood spars. Although the problems was grossly overstated (see the Aeronca site) right or wrong it was an AD, and must be complied with. A lot of mechanics just won't sign off on the inspection with the borer scope.

I have a friend with a 85 hp chief on 1300's. With both of us (430 lb total) water was washing over the tops of the back part of the floats.

LMAO!!! Okay Cessna_pilot, an education lesson....Since I'm sure they weren't refereing to the KICK A$$ rock group by that name, I think the AC/DC statement had a "little" sexual connotation to it :)

On to the Champ..... I purchased the previously mentioned 115HP 7AC from Rhyppa when he needed to upgrade to something larger to carry his family. It is a super fun little plane. Especially with just me in it. About half the time I have my son ,180+, with me and it still performs very well. Not a Super Cub but then it's not worth upwards of $100K either. I've got a couple of friends that have Champs on floats also, one is a 90HP and the other has an O-200, They both seem as good as mine when flying single person on board. With a load, horsepower is KING!! But it also has 90% to do with the pilot. The friend that has the 90HP could probably fly circles around me because he has much more time on floats than I do. He has his technique down and I am forever learning. I got my SES last summer and put in just less than 50hrs. in a couple of months. Practice, practice, practice....

On a side note: Don's Dream Machines in Georgia can "Hot Rod" that C-85. Research the Aeronca site, their is a gentleman that post there that just had his done. Good Luck
Keith

PS 90HP Champ on floats listed on Barnstormers is the one belonging to my friend. It is a VERY clean and nice Champ.

Small increases if any at all. Much better(cheaper) if able to buy an airplane with a bigger engine in it.
