1962 Cessna 150TD

Well, I never posted about it here, but unfortunately I managed to total my old C140. Took off from the grass next to a perfectly good paved runway, found a hidden wet spot in the grass with my left tire, and it pulled me hard left through a fence and into a pond...

Below is the replacement bird. I got my hands on a 1962 Cessna 150B. This particular plane has a Lowe Tailwheel conversion (Baby 180), Desser 8.50x6 tundra tires, and a horton stol kit. The panel has a garmin 660 and a single G5.

The project plans are as follows:

-Add ADSB and ifr navigation with a GNX 375
-Add a second G5 HSI for full IFR capability
-Strip and polish/paint
-be poor

The stripping and painting will be done by myself, so while time consuming, it hopefully won't be very expensive. The panel, while overkill for a Cessna 150, will come in handy for punching through marine layers and as an added insurance policy should I get into inadvertent IMC and need to file. For what it is, and the capabilities it adds, its not too expensive (or at least that's what I keep telling myself)

Below are some pictures of the new bird from ferrying it from California to Florida, the paint scheme plan (grey indicates polished areas), and the new panel plan. ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Stuff happens! You didn't mention if you got hurt in the 140. I hope not.

If you have a problem that can be solved with money, then you don't really have a problem, right?

Airplanes can be replaced and it looks like you have a nice little project ahead of you.

No injuries other than my pride! This should be a fun little project to keep my hands busy. Nothing mechanically wrong with it, just making it my own

Looks a lovely aircraft that

Swap the DI with the TC and put the altimeter where the G5/DI is.

I personally prefer the standard 6 pack.

Normally, I would also prefer the standard 6 pack. The only reason I moved the HSI up to the altimeter position is because the yoke blocks it in its usual position. I also got my instrument rating in a G1000, so im not overly accustomed to the steam gauge 6 pack for IFR flying as it is.

Have you purchased the G5's yet, if not have or did you consider a couple of AV30's ?

The plane already has one g5, and the reason I'm leaning that way over the av30 is because the av30 can not be used as an HSI for approaches. Im looking to get the plane ifr capable

Re: 1962 Cessna 150TD

Looks like you are planning to do the panel about the same way I did my 150B, but I went basic vfr for mine. Hopefully the pic of mine will help you lay out yours. All the switches are breaker switches also to clean up on the amount of circuit breakers I had to have, I also moved the headset plugs behind the seats to the door post. Love your plane!

Some great examples of workmanship, very nice. =D>

I'll be thinking twice about posting my instrument panel upgrade efforts when complete they are pale in comparison.

Re: 1962 Cessna 150TD

Slow progress stripping various parts of the plane. Good news is that the metal underneath is in amazing condition and will polish up beautifully! Since there were other threads asking about paint stripper, I am using Stewart systems ekostrip. Through a little trial and error, I found it is very temperature sensitive and likes warmer temperatures. Also, dont be afraid to lay it on thick. You'll thank yourself later! No harsh fumes and it doesn't burn your skin. ImageImageImageImageImage

That's a good looking bird.

I'm betting people on mobile see your photos correctly oriented, but people using desktop browsers see them rotated. One way to fix it is to use our gallery here and copy the BBcode that's supplied, copy and paste it into a post. It will use the photo's meta tag rotation index to correctly display it.

Buy some rope so you never have to tie your airplane down with chains!

Chains have zero give, so when the plane rocks in the wind it comes to a hard jerk at the end of the chain. Very hard on aircraft. I will never use chains to tie down. I use ratchet straps and havent had an issue, just don't suck them down super tight. Enough so there's no slack if the plane rocks and it shouldn't be an issue.

Sorry about the sideways photos everyone! Primarily use tapatalk to access BCP unfortunately... thanks for the kind words on the 150, it's gonna be a lot of work, but it should all pay off in the end
