Dates for 2012 Summer Outings

Does everyone want to go back to these same places or somewhere different. We should start thinking about the dates now, regardless of where we go. What's everybody think?

Fri - Sun July 6-7-8 San Juans, WA (KORS)

Fri - Sun July 20-21-22 Stehekin, WA (6S9)

Fri - Sun August 17-18-19 Nehalem Bay, OR (3S7)

Fri - Sun September 14-15-16 McKenzie Bridge, OR (00S)

Hey John and Lora Lee,
I can't wait! You know that Pam don't really like to fly.....I'm really hoping to get her to the San Jauns this year!! One hour and fifteen is her record so far.
McKenzie Bridge always seems to be in the middle of fire season, I vote for swapping dates with Nehalem bay.

Also think about alternatives in case things don't work with one of the above, like firefighting, or just as someplace different such as:

Sullivan Lake (0S9)
Lake Wenatchee (27W)
Minam/Reds (7OR0)
Wakanda Beach (R33)

I'd say of all the places originally listed, Nehalem is one I least care about going back to this year. Just my two cents particularly since I think I only made the Stehekin gathering last year.

Yes, it is wise to have back-up places.

We really look forward to going back to Orcas, as we were the only ones that made it that weekend. Having a shower on the field really makes it nice. Both Lopez and Orcas have Saturday Markets and lots of places to bicycle to.

You guys (folks) could come on up to BC in July (Federallies are friendly in July)
July 21-22 @ the 108Mi. House airstrip (just N of 100Mi House, BC) is the 16th annual BC Floatplane Ass'n AGM & fun weekend. Float challenged planes welcome, I'm even (trying to) do the poker run so all the stops have good grass strips as well as docks. Lots to do/see, and plenty of DIFFERENT tires to kick for a change. Cheap rooms/camping/gas (Remember: Canuck gallons are quite a bit bigger than US gallons.)

Col. Gump will be squadron com-and-ere (He's been assigned to Kimsquit)

Stehekin is a beautiful spot. It bugs me they won't let you camp at your plane. It is inconvenient to haul all your camp stuff a 1/4 plus mile to the NPS "approved" area.

Did I mention it is a beautiful area, really beautiful.

I have a well developed camping lot about 3 miles from 27W. I may be willing to host a BBQ, free camping, espresso for breakfast. Depends on the dates. I am going through firefighting school now, and it may be a busy summer with two jobs (fire fighting, A&P)

enjoy while you can. Rumor around Chelan is NPS is not going to let you land there at all. They also want the resort, and all the cabins gone with in 5 years. If it ever burns, it will not be permited to be rebuilt.

What now? They trying to make it a wilderness area? Little late for that. Maybe an extension of the coastal marine sanctuary?
Darn park service doesn't make any sense... years ago, they destroyed some old-time shelters on the Olympic mountains trail system, but then contracted a replica of a different old time trail shelter-- built it offsite, and helicoptered it into place. Doh!

Guess we better get to Stehiken while we still can. Planets must be aligned just right, this year I have all those weekends off! Looks like it could be a great summer for flying!

Man I can't wait till this NW/Oregon WX clears up. This is starting to get depressing. Trying to make a flight this weekend into Tillamook and the WX keeps getting worse.

I don't know what the NPS plans for Stehikan are. I heard that they are tearing down some cabins this summer because they decided a hundred years was long enough for them to be there.
I have also heard from a few sources that if Stehikan were ever to burn, it would not be permitted to be rebuilt. What really bothers me about that, is how can the NPS decide that if your property catches fire, it isn't yours anymore?
I will stop now before a hijack this thread and start a property rights vs. Public access discussion since I can argue several side of that topic.

I have done a lot of work for NPS at Lassen NP and at Pt Reyes National Seashore. Never worked at any other NP but if those two are indicators , good luck.

This is still in the planning stages, but I thought I would throw it out there.
Don Watts is going to have a fly-in at his place sometime in September, he has a great grass strip about 5 miles South West of McMinnville Oregon.
Lots of room for camping by your airplane, horseshoe pits, BBQing, clay pigeon shooting (or any fire arms for that matter), fire pit and best of all.....airplane games.
Flour bombs, spot landings, poker run.........
If anyone has suggestions please chime in!

Might do that. I don't think we'll camp, but we we're going to head over Sat afternoon to say hi if the wx is good.
