2013 Bacon Strip Ranch Fly-In date

Greetings friends,

The 2013 annual Bacon Strip Ranch Fly-In and campout date is now set for OCT 12-13! Last year the theme (that is, the excuse to fly-out) was the christening of the new shade roof, formally and affectionately named "Johnny B's Fly-In Bar and Grill". The event was a raging success and alot of fun.
The focus for this years event is the saturday night "Most Atrocious Hawaiian Shirt Contest". Dig out that loud, obnoxious, hawaiian shirt (the one you wouldn't be caught dead in) and wear it proudly at this gala Bacon Strip ranch fly-in event! And if you don't own such a shirt, you have plenty of time to find one.
There will be a significant prize (TBA) and award for the winner, so DO take this challenge seriously!
If you've never been out to the BSR, it's a great place with an easy dry lake landing strip and an elevation of about 1200 feet.
Nearby points of interest for a fun aerial recon includes the Kelso Dunes, the restored Kelso train station, Pisgah Crater and of course the famous Roy's Diner (with strip (dirt) at nearby Amboy.
As always, there will be open barbecues, hangar racing and just plain fun camping and comararderie. And all under the new shade roof! In addition to the "Most Atrocious Hawaiian Shirt" award, there will be (like last year) classy, solid granite awards for the Longest Distance Flown, Best Airplane and Best Aero Camp.
Last year a couple of big tired Maules flew in and stole the show! (I wonder who they were?!) Hope they return this year!

I'll update this post occasionally as the date gets closer. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected].

Re: 2013 Bacon Strip Ranch Fly-In date

I was out at the Bacon Strip last weekend (camped out) and everything looked in great shape. The strip, the shade roof, the windsock AND the outhouse all looked perfect and untouched from last visit in April.
In addition to the awards mentioned in the first e-mail blurb, there will also be cool souvenir participation awards for anyone who flies in either day.

Hope to see a bunch of you out there.

I know it has been posted before, but I'm not finding the lat/lon for the strip. Can you post it again? Thanks.

Re: 2013 Bacon Strip Ranch Fly-In date

I was out at the bacon Strip three weeks ago and everything looked in great shape.
John Bacon just updated his facebook page and mentions the upcoming fly-in. You don't need to be a facebook member to view it:

The grand prize for the Saturday night "Most Atrocious Hawaiian Shirt" contest is a $100.00 Aircraft Spruce gift card so it may be worth digging out that gaudy, polyester shirt that you wouldn't (previously) be caught dead in.

Re: 2013 Bacon Strip Ranch Fly-In date

I was out there last weekend, looked nice.

I will be coming out for the flyin but I'll be driving as the supercub is in my hangar torn apart getting a new fuse and skin...

Look for us in a red toyota and white jeep..

We have pretty bright lights on them if anyone needs to make a night landing. I can also bring a bunch of chem lights to line the runway if anyone thinks they will be a dusk or late arrival..

Unless anyone has a better frequency I'll be up on 129.45 if you need winds or surface conditions. I plan on being there as of Friday night.

The frequency John uses at the Bacon Strip is the normal multicom frequency (for uncontrolled airports without a Unicom) of 122.9.

I should have given a call out in the blind to see who might be on freq. Do I get credit for attending? Hope you all had fun!

Re: 2013 Bacon Strip Ranch Fly-In date

It was a blast.

22 airplanes showed up and a good time was had by all.

A T-bone even showed up! If it's not the first twin at the Bacon Strip, it's certainly one of the biggest.

Re: 2013 Bacon Strip Ranch Fly-In

Yesterday (Saturday 26-Oct-2013) I stopped at the Bacon Strip and found a pair of glasses on the ground, probably residue from the fly-in. They look feminine, kind of small and horizontally opposed. Let me know if they are yours and I'll mail them out. [email protected] John Lohr N4728B
