2014.08.22 Hawaii surf (epic)

Friday 22-AUG-2014 HIGH SURF ADV. S. SHORES DUDEs!

Rode my motorcycle to the Ala Wai small boat harbor to get ready for a Sunday sail. But, was amazed at yet another very clean South Swell. The parking lot was jammed with surfers and law enforcement (I luckily have reserved parking). Walking down the 800 pier I decided to forget cleaning the sailboat and go surfing...very good choice. Sets were about 8'.

Borrowed the wife's mini-tanker (8'). Classic Blue Hawaii from the 90's. Photo: by self today

The last shark fatality in Hawaii was in 2013. There have been only 10 recorded deaths in the Hawaii Islands.

Compared to over 9,000 traffic death recorded in Hawaii. (3) deaths on Oahu in the last 48 hours.

I would rather be surfing!

Yeah mosquitoes are the reason I don't fly to Africa anymore. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt - and managed to avoid getting malaria!
HA! Suck it, mosquitoes!! 8)

I worked in India during the Monsoons! Mud, open sewers, and farm animals in the streets, plus Malaria. Not to mention the entourage (and enemies) with automatic weapons. The Kashmir region has it's dangers. I'll do almost anything for money

I don't mind flying to Bombay nearly as much - except during the monsoon season! Other times, it's not nearly as bad as Sub-Saharan Africa. We've had nearly 60 crewmembers get malaria in Africa - none of whom were using any preventative measures #-o

Do you do some kind of aerial mapping?

I used to fly Commanders and Navajos with "ground sensing" equipment (politically correct terminology).

The India trip was to help the India Army (Signal Command) learn UNIX, PKI (public key infrastructure encryption), SNORT, Apache and other open source software technologies. There are some really intelligent folks in India that were fun to work with (but, also some think Americans are the Devil in disguise ). I was well taken care of and really loved the people I met, regardless of their politics.

Not only are mosquitoes deadly, but they're ungrateful little buggers too. Boggles the mind to think of how many I've gotten drunk over the years, and none has ever had the decency to thank me...

Ah, gotcha. I have a friend that used to do aerial mapping all over Africa and the Middle East in light twins. He was on an assignment in the Greek isles, met a cute Greek girl and is now an A&P mechanic for a Greek airline. :D

Iceman,

Cool! Great time to go!

I will probably be on Oahu, which is very crowded compared to the Big Is., as you know. Then 27-OCT leaving to WA and CA.

Get down to Honokahau Harbor and fish on "Cherry Pit" with Capt. Bob Cherry. The dude is a rockstar. Tell him the old guy with the Aluminum Boat from Oahu referred him. He may remember me, I tied next to him for (4) days a few months ago. He does not mind sharing info.

The Big Is. has fish!

8' surf... man, I don't know what I'd do with myself.

Had an epic evening the last night in the 4' swell we got. Nice and clean, long rides on the 9'6" barge.

Sounds fun. How are the temps? Is the Gulf Stream working? Please send a Picture!

Across the globe...

Ala Moana has been 4-6' for over two weeks since I got back. No lag day and night. Some days had 8' sets! I went down today to do an oil change and it is still showing great waves! There was a tourist using my dock box to take pictures. I bet she had never seen such clean surf. The Southern Hemisphere will not stop sending good waves, which is great!
