2015.07.05.KONP (Chg #3) Amphib Annual Complete

After saltwater, the bearings were corroded and some will need replacement. I am switching grease type to AeroShell #22, I used the cheaper AeroShell #6 and it really did NOT work well for me.

The other MLG parts were in great condition:

Inboard RMLG bearing heavily corroded:

Outboard RMLG bearing heavily corroded too:

Shipping crate makes a great work bench. Just add furniture dollies.

Nail puller (mini crowbar) can remove the grease seal without damage. Great find. It was purchased in Japan, circa 1975,

Re: 2015.07.05.KONP Amphib MLG bearing OH

You might want to try a waterproof grease like ACG-2. Carry a grease gun and hit those wheels as often as possible. Drill a weep hole in the grease seal (#50) and pump until the water stops coming out.

For what it's worth you will still loose more bearings than you think you should. In my 15 years working on wip amphibs I chucked out scores of those things

Thank you for the guidance. I need to start taking better care of these bearings.

I do drill the #50 hole opposite the valve stem for purging water and stale grease.

This is why Aerocet developed sealed bearings for their amphibs.

The cost of landing in salt.

Aerocet is doing a great job in R&D. Sealed saves big money and time (and bad language). I know this from my boat trailer in Kona. Saved me $1000s.

I wish Wip would offer the same!

Small crack in lining, may need to replace...

Are the grove pads the same as Cleveland/rapco?

Grove brake pad linings have a different part # in Wipaire 2100A parts manual. If they physically interchange, I do not know. Be nice if so.

Re: 2015.07.05.KONP Amphib MLG bearing OH

Wipaire sent bearings, race cups, grease seals, brake linings/rivets. Also, which I like, a Certificate of Conformity for each item.

Will replace all bearings and races today. AeroShell 22 greas arrives tomorrow from Chief Aircraft, Grants Pass, OR.

Re: 2015.07.05.KONP (Chg #1) Amphib 100 hour insp.

Decided to do a full 100 hour inspection on N275BC.

Image

In the future I will take better care of my bearings. More grease and closer time maintenance intervals.

Image

Will spray ACF50 in selective areas.

Image

When I installed the floats I may not of torqued this #4 hydraulic fittings enough. Very small amount of hydraulic fluids seen here..

Re: 2015.07.05.KONP (Chg #1) Amphib 100 hour insp.

Using solvent to clean up wheel wells. Pumped fresh grease through all the zircs. Messy and time consuming. Cycled gear with hand pump. Everything looking fine.

Left wheel with fresh bearings/races installed!

Ready to "roll". "Bow (nose in nautical language) Landing Gear" ( BLG) is good to go!
