Last time we were in town there was no sign of Tater! Maybe he was taking the morning off.

One summer about 10 years ago I was living out of my truck for extended periods of time and would use the coffee shop across from OTE as a base camp/wifi source. Tater would usually park himself at my outside table for a half hour or so and provide entertainment.

A couple laps at 18 road would be great, and pretty friendly for those of us out of shape after the winter!

I may have missed it, but I didn't see a price of admission anywhere. I understand the EAA is providing meals, but is it just for donations???

How late can I RSVP? I have some in-laws coming in to town and we are trying to make it a family trip.

Let's hook up, as I'm also planning Rollins Pass early Friday. The earlier the better for photo shoot. I'll have a pro photographer riding with me--we could get some awesome air-to-air shots.

Planning a dawn flight Saturday to a lot of the classic desert strips to get photos & videos.

Outside chance I might leave Thursday to stop in Cortez and shop for some airstrip/hangar/house land.

My preferred route from FNL is Milner Pass or Cameron Pass. Milner is basically from Estes through RNP, then pick up the river just after Granby. Winds are generally much tamer than Rollins Pass.

How high do you need to get on this route?

Re: 2016 Mack Mesa Fat Tire Jamboree May 20-22

Looking at the wind forecast at http://aviationweather.gov/adds/winds at SFC, 6000' & 9,000' it looks VERY windy in W Colorado, Eastern Utah for Fri-Sun. As in 25-35+. I'm not going to back out yet, but I'm thinking one doesn't want to be in those canyons or around the mesa's with that kind of wind. Been there, done that and it isn't fun (or safe).

One time a number of years ago it was "only" blowing 20 to 25 maybe at Canyonlands CNY when I stopped in for fuel. Told the guy/pilot running the fuel op I was headed to Mineral Canyon. He strongly advised me against that. I went anyway (not the smartest move nor best decision I ever made). No problem getting safely on the ground at Mineral Canyon. Wasn't too much later and the same pilot flew over to check on me--thought that was mighty nice of him.

I'm thinking with the forecasted winds you all should just push it to the following weekend. Not self serving at all but Allen and I are planning on camping that weekend anyway![emoji1]

I'm hoping to visit a bunch of Utah strips Memorial Day weekend. Was of course planning on the fly-in and this weekend. I'll post plans next week as the weather forecast firms up. Anyone interested in camping out in the desert or stopping in Mack Mesa--send me an email please [email protected]

Just too windy this weekend for the canyons...

maintenance downtime made the decision for me. Sadly I won't be able to make the trip this year. For those who make it to Mack, have a great time!

So what's the deal? Is everyone bailing? I'm planning on flying down first thing Saturday from Lander.

Re: 2016 Mack Mesa Fat Tire Jamboree May 20-22

Surface winds for Grand Junction are going to be very strong and gusty for Saturday so we will not be flying to Mack this weekend. We have been there and done that (like Ted) and don't care to repeat. NOAA weather says

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WILL BE DRIER BUT SURFACE WINDS WILL INCREASE
BOTH DAY. STRONG SOUTHWEST WINDS AREA POSSIBLE SATURDAY.

I will be there next year for sure. The wife is retiring at the end of this school year. 36 years. The beach house is almost done. Nothing stopping me. The wind this year looks significant. Fly safe!

12,500 is generally good. You can go lower if winds are light. I've always had better rides here vs. Rollins.

You guys made good decisions to pass. It was very windy indeed and not much flying was done. We did have the poker run but surface winds on Saturday were above 40mph. Very sporty. Too sporty for me.

But I did get some awesome riding in at 18 road and got to see a few old friends and make some new ones.

Today however I was rewarded with fantastic conditions - then flew home with at one point with a 60mph tailwinds. Grand junction to Longmont in an hour and 20 minutes!

We only had about 10 or so planes show up. And we're so treated royally to a fantastic barbecue. TWO live bands performed - one each in Friday and Saturday nights.

Thanks to to Ladd Klinglesmith for all the organizational effort. Also to Travis and Elizabeth. And finally to Steve and Lexi for being gracious hosts. See you next time!
