This presents a typical problem with stem thu hub wheels. The bead looses grip with the rim and can shear the valve stem off. A guy I know ran tubeless with Goodyears so has to avoid that problem, But when the bead slipped on landing, air pressure was released and he almost ended up with an instant flat tire. He had to run them at a minimum air pressure. which was too hard. I have 26 abw on my s7. I run 3.5 lbs. Anymore than that and the ride is rougher than I like on the boney stuff.
ABW's have the valve fitting on the sidewall. This design should be adopted by Dresser before I would consider them.
Unfortunately not all of us can justify spending $1200 a tire for Airstreaks and $2000 for ABW's.
Not all of us "need" 26" tires and the associated drag.
The Desser tire was designed to have softer sidewalls and be run with lower pressures. The Goodyears are designed to be quite stiff and run at higher pressures. Even run at slightly higher pressures the Dessers will be considerably softer than anything except Airstreaks.
I would love to have a set of 26 Airstreaks on my S7 but I can't justify the spend. Considering the fact that I can buy 3 complete pairs of Desser tires AND tubes for the cost of just a single Airstreak, I think for me that's a better deal.
If you look at the tire size poll, you'll see that it's a better deal for most of us.
BTW, Desser is coming out with a 26" version soon.
I applaud ABW's hard work and commitment to the Bush Pilot community. For the pilots that truly need them, there's nothing better.
But I also applaud Desser for seeing a need for something a bit more moderate and taking the risk to develop and sell a limited use tire at an affordable price point.
