380X150-5 Tire on Cessna Light Fork

Hi,
Just wondering if a Cessna standard fork will fit a 380X150-5 tire. The tire would be 1.5" taller and 1" wider than a regular 5.00-5 tire. It's unusually wet here at the moment. I'll say no more. I thought I read here that some folks who have not yet got a bigger fork installed can fit one on.

Asking for a friend

I think you could just do the math. If you have 3/4" plus a little of clearance above the tire and a 1/2" plus a little of clearance on each of the tire it will work. Buy one and mount it and give a report.

I could do that, but I'd be re-inventing the wheel. I've measured it and it looks tight, but maybe it would work. If nobody here has done it, maybe it's not doable.

I'll put my effort into finding a Cessna 310 fork instead and go that road with it.

I've never even heard of that tire size--
is it something that's fairly common over there?

Yep you can get this tire very easily even in US. In imperial it works out as, 15x6.00-5

There is a 172 near me which has the Michelin version of this tire on a standard nose fork, also has 700's on the mains.

I had that tire on my 150, but it didnt fit in the standard fork. I had a fork that was the same height as standard but wider to run it. YMMV.

I have a 310 Fork and a 600x6 tire up front on my 56 182. But I think the setup in the above pic is what I would do today. So simple

Re: 380X150-5 Tire on Cessna Light Fork

What is the actual measured Diameter of that 380-150-5 tire when inflated? I have looked over the ranges of OD specs on the manufacturers data, but I am curious what the actual inflated OD people are seeing is. Closer to the high end of the listed spec or the smaller end of the listed spec.

Does anyone have a photo next to an inflated 500-5 to see the size difference in practice? I have seen lots of comparison photos of inflated an 380 next to an uninflated 500-5. I have been wanted to try squeezing the 380-150-5 into my existing tailwheel fork. I have precious little clearance across the top of the fork, while I think it might fit, I would not have much clearance for increase in diameter while spinning. Real in service numbers would be awesome if people have them to sure.

I just look at the section width and think the added floatation on the tail would be awesome!

Re: 380X150-5 Tire on Cessna Light Fork

Just one like this https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... -01434.php

Michelin, 6 ply and re-used the same tube 500-5 tube. Maybe I should have used a new tube, but this one had only done 3 flights. They say a tube takes a shape after a while but it works fine for me.

I'm glad it worked out for you. These are by far the best value for money option out there :D

I suggested it some time ago but no one seemed interested...

Hey big dog, I heard you barking loud and clear!

That mod was excellent value. I got two of those 380-150 tires in a swop for a 172 part so I am ready to do the mod to another airplane too. I'm the only man over here with an induction rubber on the oleo strut. None of the local guys has a clue what its there for.

Re: 380X150-5 Tire on Cessna Light Fork

Hey onefitty... What tire pressure would you recommend? I put in 45 psi. I think it's too hard. The book says 49psi for a 5.00-5 tire but if you have a 6.00-6 on the nose it says 29psi. I was going to go 35-39 psi.

Whatever you feel comfortable with, I run 25 psi

Re: 380X150-5 Tire on Cessna Light Fork

Based on this very interesting thread, yesterday I 1) Joined backcountrypilot.org, 2) installed said Michelin 380x150-5 time on the nose fork of my 1959 182B There is at least 1/2" clearance on the sides and 3/4" on the top. HUGE increase in contact patch, slight nose high attitude, will require 7.00-6 on the mains to leve!. How do I add a photo?

Alternate view. May need to increase mains size to make it gravel worthy.

How do you do that? Lol Well and make it through your next annual.. Your strut is also a little overcharged...

Seriously though, my 182B had 6x6's all the way around with a 310 fork. Someone turned a blind eye, as a HD fork is not an option on a B model due to the scissors attach above the fork on the tube. To properly put a HD fork on a B you need to cut the tube, attach scissors to fork (same process as an airglas) and get a field approval. Which is hard to get as an STC is available. (Airglas) I know this stuff works, it's cheap, but it ain't legal....Your mileage may vary.....
