Re: 4th Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

After breakfast Saturday morning (meeting at Lodi @ 9:00 am), some flying will be done. Some potential spots will be pointed out to pilots ( locations given) and some pilots will go to different places to check them out . All will meet back at Red Hills and discuss which places (including "The Trench") are the best to fly to and which skill level is needed. Some will then fly out for a couple of hours to locations of their choice.

We can all meet back at Red Hills @ 2:00pm and those who wish can participate in the water balloon bombing and spot landing competitions.

Then @ 6:00 pm or so the potluck dinner will begin. Then the sitting around and good conversation will go on till individual decide it is bed time.

Sunday morning when people are ready (maybe around 7:00-8:00 or so) a hosted breakfast will be served. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, orange juice and whatever (possible leftovers from previous night or whatever any one else brings).

Then again, good talk, meeting other flyers and families, and fly out for those who want to. Any time Sunday people who want to can leave or stay a while and do whatever anybody decides.

This is an easy kick back meeting of pilots and familys for some flying, conversation and getting ready for the summer flying.

Re: 4th Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

I'll come in to Red Hills Friday afternoon.

Will be at Lodi for breakfast and look forward to seeing everyone again. I hear there is an airstrip list floating around that attendees might use for some fun on Sat & Sun.

I'm considering driving in. Are there driving directions or an address available?

Re: 4th Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

Directions for driving are generally: Drive east bound on highway 108 towards Jamestown, at the Yosemite Junction (Highway 108 and 120) turn south on Highway 120 toward Yosemite.
Travel about 1 or so miles and as you come down a small hill there will be an entrance to big business on the right. This is just before 120 crosses the railroad tracks.Turn into this business' entry.

Drive west approximately 1/4 mile or so (you will pass a parking/storage lot on the left) shortly after that there is a dirt road (partially paved) on the left that crosses the railroad tracks.

Turn left onto this road, cross the tracks and turn right. This is the driveway to Red Hills. Follow this road west bound along the railroad tracks. In a mile or so you will go through a gate (I think there is a sign there that says it is the Moyles Place). go through the gate (it should be open. If not call (209) 984-5011 (Jack and Myrna's #) someone will come out and open it). keep following the road along the tracks another 3/8 of a mile or so and the tracks will turn to the N/W and the road to the S/W right down the side of the runway. another 150 yards and you are there.
I hope this is helpful. If you get confused, call the above number and someone will guide you in. Also you can google it from the coordinates on the announcement.

Re: 4th Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

You got the driving directions pretty much right Hawk. Here's my driving directions:

From the Central Valley....
Head towards Yosemite. You should be on Hwy 120/108 heading out of Oakdale.
As you head up into the hills you have to turn right to stay on 120 to head to Yosemite.
About 1.8 miles after you make that right turn you will be coming up on the railroad tracks and you will see Enterprise Drive on the right, turn right here.
About half a mile up you'll turn LEFT on High Tech Drive.
Cross the railroad tracks and turn right.
Just stay on the road until you come to a gate with a Private Property sign on it. If the gate is locked call the number that Hawk posted and Jack or someone will come open the gate.

I'll be arriving Saturday just after lunch so I'll see you all there!

Re: 4th Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

We had another fantastic fly-in! Jack and Myrna were as gracious as ever as our hosts. The turnout was slightly less this year but we also pick up a few new Red Hill Flyers. Actually, with all the yellow planes that showed up we were considering changing the name to Yellow Hills.

I wasn't able to get there until Saturday afternoon but by Saturday evening I saw parked out in the fields two Sport Cubs, a Husky, a Champ, a couple 152's, a couple 182's, and a Super Cub. There were also several fly-bys and stop-bys with folks just stopping briefly to say hello. We had folks from Santa Maria, Yuba City, Lincoln, Fresno, Concord, and one town way up on near the north coast that I can't remember.

There was a fly-out for breakfast on Saturday morning and water balloon bombing and spot landing contests. Sorry all you cubs and 180's, it was a Cessna 152 that one the spot landing contest by landing RIGHT on the line without bouncing. Way to go Chris!

Potluck dinner Saturday night was excellent with Blackwater and his wife supplying some really nice wine (for those who were done flying for the day). We sat around the table telling stories and catching up before moving over to the bonfire for more stories.

Sunday morning Myrna made some delicious scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and pancakes. Folks packed up but still hung around for a while, no one wanting to leave the peace and serenity of Jack's little slice of heaven.

I didn't fly this time around so I'll leave it to the guys who did to talk about their flyouts to the local strips. Let's not forget the adventures of those who left their wallets behind and many thanks to those who rescued them.

Here are a few pictures to whet your appetite. I'm sure rfinkle will post LOTS more pictures and videos. Thanks to Rich (rfinkle) and Hawk for helping to organize the fly-in, the fly-outs, and the activities. You guys are awesome!

The dog and I had a great time! Thank you Jack and Myrna and everyone who helped put this together, and thank you Blackwater for taking me up in the Husky, that was a blast. It was a pleasure spending time with such a great group of people at such a nice place.

Looks like a great time. Sonora is my 'home' and hope to visit that strip sometime. I am out there once or twice a summer. Sometimes with the Maule but when I I am there without the Maule I'll rent a 172 from Springfield Flying Service and fly around for old times sake.

BTW that looks like Chris flying 'Snowball' the Stearman. I recognize that slip/fly-by everytime.

Yep, we tried to get him to stop in, but he had a paying passenger for that flight.
