'56 C-182 door hinge
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?

Hi all,
I need to replace a pilots door hinge on my ’56 Cessna 182. The door can be moved up and down at least ½” and the hinges on the “long side” (the part attached to the door) are thin and close to failing. I would like to replace both the upper and lower hinge, but the upper hinge is the main culprit… I have tried looking around but have struck out and am hoping to get some suggestions here. Photos:

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Is it possible to build up the material on the hinge by welding, then reshaping it?

Have you tried aircraft salvage yards?

Try:
Faeth Aircraft Parts
Sacramento, CA
916-368-1832
Sutton Aircraft Salvage
Palmer, AK
907-745-6969
I have dealt with both places and was 100% satisfied with them and the parts received.

Skywagon city usually has door hinges as well. I've been happy with the parts I've recieved from them.

Those are not the original steel hinges that came with that airplane. Those are from later model cessnas. They are huge money from Cessna.
Rob Air Repair makes those hinges.
http://www.robairrepair.com/ You can also install larger hinge pins to remove the slop. If the are not cracked yet i would install the larger pin.

I had to replace the upper pilot's door hinge on my P172D and was just about petrified at Cessna's price. My IA found one off of a wrecked 172 (same exact hinge, just not cracked or worn like mine was) at Beegles in Greeley, CO--whose hangars are within spitting distance of my hangar. I don't recall the price now, but it seems like it was about a third or a quarter of Cessna's price, and it was "right now" vs. waiting for Cessna's 6 month backlog in shipping odd parts.

Thanks for the suggestions on those - I tried a few salvage yards, but not those.

Also maybe try Upper Valley Aviation in Chilliwack BC
Discount Aircraft Salvage in Deer Park WA.
Surprise Valley Aviation in Cedarville CA.
There used to be a Cessna specialty salvage place in Redmond OR but I think they're gone now.

If you get ahold of Scott Mauch at Beegles, if they don't have one, he's likely to be able to tell you who does. Nice guy, very knowledgeable.

Jack,
When I thought I wrecked mine (they look the same as yours) I posted on here asking for help and a user named 494 posted this:
"I have a bunch of used Cessna door hinges. Feel free to call me at 308-390-5974. I think I can get you set up"
I called and he sorted me out. Good guy.

This was spot on. Rob at Robair said the same thing. They are from a later 180/185. I'm fairly close to his home field at Apex, so i'll be flying in soon to have him take a look and provide a repair estimate.
