6th Annual Red Hills Memorial Weekend Fly-In

Mark your calendars! The Red Hills Fly In will be happening May 24th-26th at the Red Hills Strip. This is an informal affair so don't expect a bunch of events. But then again you never know. We'll be posting more in this space in the coming days.

Also, please feel free to join Jack at Myrna at their Easter Weekend Party. Good food and lots of activities for the kids.

Make sure you're your fairly proficient in off airport ops. There are no clear approaches to this field. You know, unless you're used to that sort of thing.

Also make sure you've electronically signed the liability release before landing there. If you've done it once you've done it for life, no need to sign again. It's available here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... usp=pp_url

The area around Red Hills should be spectacular this year due to all the rain. Wildflowers will offer great photo opportunities. Be sure to bring your camera!

There is good interest in this years event. The following video is a brief summary of the 2018 Red Hills Fly-in. Red Hills is a laid back and relaxing weekend with lots of flying, food and visiting with fellow BCP members.

Re: 6th Annual Red Hills Memorial Weekend Fly-In

Here is a promotional bump for the Fly-in.
Red Hills is an especially great Fly-In if you want to have something to bring your wife or partner or kids to. Camping is on a very soft lawn in the front yard of some of the nicest people you would ever meet. The weather in May is very pleasant. Also several people drive in each year so that's an option also. Here are a few photos from past years (photo credits to CFOT and Rob56)

Also, to me, this is a great spot for someone to get their feet wet (or dusty) with a dirt strip and non standard pattern and conditions. The Landing Strip conditions are good for even small tires but the approach sight picture can throw people off because you are coming in low over a hill on short final and your touchdown point is on a slight up hill. I recommend to anyone that hasn't been in there before that they make the first approach as low as you are comfortable, look it all over and do a go around. That gets you familiar with everything so on the second pass if it doesn't feel perfect you are confident of the go around also. Of course watch the safety video and sign the liability waiver. Also communicate on the CTAF and be extremely careful, watching for kids, dogs, other planes and powered parachutes. If anyone would like some off-airport instruction for the first time they go in, I would be glad to meet them at Columbia or Oakdale for a check out on the strip or just PM me and I can give you some pointers over the phone.

Re: 6th Annual Red Hills Memorial Weekend Fly-In

My plan A is to go to this fly in. It sounds like a lot of fun. I live north of Mt Shasta California in a valley with mountains in every direction. Sometimes we cannot leave and sometimes we cannot get home. Just checked the forecast for the next week and it looks like it will be no problem getting out and down to Red Hills. The problem is getting home. It looks like rain all around us on Sunday.

So plan B is to go to the Oregon coast and dig clams and put out a few crab pots. And I will be driving. I love having a good fun plan B.

Re: 6th Annual Red Hills Memorial Weekend Fly-In

Red Hills Memorial Day Fly-In has been re-scheduled to May 31, 2019 due to the weather.

Unfortunately our weather patterns have been unusually wet and the airstrip is very muddy and not suitable for the fly in on Memorial Day.

The forecast for May 31 looks like the airstrip and weather will be dry and enjoyable for the fly-in.

The activities include Saturday Breakfast in Columbia (O22), spot landing contest, balloon bombing contest and Potluck dinner on Saturday. Be sure to bring something for the potluck.

Sunday brunch sponsored by Jack & Myrna.

Our group will have breakfast in Columbia O22 at Mandys Breakfast House around 9:00 AM. It is a short walk (7 minutes) from the airport. We have a table for 15 reserved and the food is great. Please join us!

We are hoping your schedule allows you to attend on May 31 – June

Hi fellow BCP'ers:

Just a reminder that Red Hills is on this weekend. The weather looks good, the runway is in good condition and it should be a good time for all.

We are looking forward to seeing you again this year.

Re: 6th Annual Red Hills Memorial Weekend Fly-In

We had an enjoyable family weekend at the re-scheduled Red Hills fly in. As usual, Jack & Myrna were great hosts and we had a few new faces this year.

The runway was in great condition and the weather cooperated with warm and pleasant days. Here is a short video of the weekend.
