Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

8:50 tires STC on a 185

My friend just bought a 1975 185, I am helping him out with it. He has the McCaulley wheels and brakes on that are going to be replaced with a complete new kit from Airframes Alaska. Anyway.... He is running 8:50’s and needs the STC to run 8:50’s. When I had my 185 years ago I got the STC from Kenmore to run the 8:50’s on my Cleveland equipped 185. Is Kenmore still the “go to” place for this paper work? Are there any other sources?

Thanks

Can you run the GY 8:50’s on the Alaska Airframes wheels with the Kenmore STC, I thought it specified Cleveland wheels?

Airframes’ wheels are MOA replacements for Cleveland’s, I believe. If so...same-same.

For 8.50s on a wagon, just use the FAA letter to Atlee Dodge. It says 8.50 tires are a minor on that plane. No STC required. Yes, it specifies 4 ply tires, but I’m guessing most mechanics are okay with six ply. Here’s the letter:

Airframes told my A&P that I couldn't use ABI wheels and brakes if I was replacing McCauleys. Your friend buying from Airframes, Is he buying Clevelands or ABI from them? If he's getting ABI to replace McCauleys, I want the same deal!

Sorry to distract from the question you're really asking. I'd just hate for your friend to be as far down the replacement road as I was when it was finally determined that I couldn't do what I wanted to.

First of all, all of Airframes’ wheels and brakes are STC’d. Second, many of their kits are PMA replacements for Cleveland wheels brakes, thus direct replacements.

As to McCauleys, just buy the STD’d kit that fits the airplane.

He is getting Clevelands, Airframes told him what they told your mechanic.

I had McCauleys on an A185F. There is a gap in the paperwork between having McCauleys and installing ABIs. It can be bridged by installing Cleveland’s under STC, removing the Cleveland’s, and installing the ABIs as a direct replacement. Possibly you can borrow a set of Clevelands to install on your airplane long enough to get the entry in your logs. If you find the paperwork is ratty, Cleveland publishes the STC and permission letter on their website.

Interesting. I was under the impression that their STC allowed direct installation of their wheels, regardless of previous installation.

I bought a set of their wheels for my 175, and they provided Atlee Dodges STC to cover the installation at no additional cost.

Lots of twists and turns in that business. In any case, I’d sure want to get rid of the McCauleys.

I am well aware of the McCaulley’s. I told my buddy they were NOT going to stay on the airplane, period! He has a complete Cleveland kit on the way. I removed McCaulley’s off both of my 185’s years ago and replaced with Clevelands.

Just curious, but you know there is 2 styles of McCauley wheels right? You never specified which he has. The 2 piece ones work fine. It's the 3 piece ones that are the bad ones. If he has the 2 piece wheels then I would just keep running them.

The 2 pc McCauley wheels and brakes but not the 3 pc are listed as approved on the Kenmore 8.50x6 tire STC.
