It does weigh 19 lbs...dry. I've only test run it and tested some small loads. It hunts on the throttle a little but seems great for the most part.

What about altitude performance? Our Yamaha 3000 does not like 7800' elevation. Looking for one you can adjust for altitude.

That is a very good point. I'll check again how accessible the carb is and if it has any adjustments.

It does require a little planning ahead though, and runtime on those little bottles is going to be pitiful at max load (which you may be doing with preheaters). Still, a few bucks in propane is probably enough to get the engine warm before flight, and that's not such a terrible thing.

I dunno. I just can't get excited about little propane bottles. They seem kinda short on burn time, and while not hard to refill from a standard 5-gallon or larger, it can be inconvenient.

I'd rather burn some fuel. The little Dirty Hands Tools generator above has a fuel vent closure, btw. You only need to vent it when it's running to prevent low pressure in the fuel tank.

Looking at the Ryobi, it says that it can be hooked up to a larger tank.

Also, it is a bit heavy at 38 pounds, but Harbor Freight sells a 700w generator for $109.99. It may be absolute junk, but the price makes it somewhat interesting.

Re: 800 watt 19 lb. generator

82db is decently loud to run for a while around camp, but $109 is certainly enticing.

On carb adjustment, I ended up re-jetting my Honda EU3000. It did OK here at about 6k feet when jetted for sea level, but high load at 9-10k elevations were enough to cause it to bog down badly. A new jet kept it running smoothly. It's also worth noting, high elevation has the same effect on a generator engine that it does on anything els - lower power output to turn the machine. As electrical load increases so does the force required to make that power, so running at high altitudes will reduce the power you can get. It doesn't seem as pronounced as say a car or plane (I can run the A/C in my camper regardless), but you can tell it's being pushed a lot more up high for the same power load.

Haha...then turn around and spend $20,000 on airplane mods to buy a few lbs more useful load.

Not nearly as loud as the 10mm rounds I'm going to shoot into it after three minutes of listening to it run... :D

If weight isn't an object, I would buy the new(er) harbor freight 2000W. I know the engineer behind it and it's a great little machine. Hard to beat at $500. It is however 53lbs. Reviews are nearly 5 stars out of 700+ reviews.

Just changed my mind based on this thread and instead of spending $1100 on a Honda generator bought this Predator from Harbor Freight w/ coupon for $449! I have ran it for 24 hours and it is absolutely fantastic and as far as I am concerned matches the expensive Honda in every way! Thanks for the recommendation!!

IMHO blustery macho man comments like this are offensive and add nothing to the conversation.

Re: 800 watt 19 lb. generator

I edited my post to make it less macho...hope that salves some of the offense.

FWIW, I wasn't born a misanthrope, I was driven there...at least in part by people who have no awareness of their noise signature and how it might affect others, or worse yet, people who get off on making as much noise as they can. Maybe they were hushed too many times as two-year-olds and they can't help it, but regardless...

We're pilots for crying out loud...we can spend a few more dollars for a quiet generator if we really need one in the first place.

And just WHEN did anyone accuse me of contributing to a conversation in the first place?

Oh, almost forgot... :D

Maybe so, but this one just struck me wrong.
Kinda like when someone threatens to shoot "that noisy damn airplane if it goes over my house one more time".
Or when some wannabe on a handgun discussion site makes a comment about "putting someone down".

There was a story in the news a couple years ago,
some campers got into a tiff about someone making too much noise,
then driving too fast thru the campground...
it degenerated into one person trying to run someone over with his big 4WD pickup,
and then someone else shooting the driver dead.
I'll bet that the whole thing started with a comment eerily similar to Hammer's.
