I'm sure Nizina is familiar with this one, and it's pilots;

Wrangell Mountain Air's, the driving force behind buying it was Don, hence the 'ate one for DW' N numbers ....lol

44Z from Rusts must be pretty famous up there. I chartered that airplane while TDY up there a while back. They took me out to the Glacier.. Best couple hundred bucks I ever spent!!

Re: A photo of the most badass bushplane ever

43G in the first set of photos is Coyote Air operating out of Coldfoot.

I flew a Beaver for the better part of 8 years in Kodiak, mostly on amphibious floats. Great old airplanes, and real workhorses.

With the later modifications, the GW can go up to the original DHC 2 Mk III Turbo Beaver gross weight of 5370 from the original 5090. There are mods now to take the Mk III up to 6000 pounds.

Takeoff distance is very short, even pretty heavy. Limiting factor is getting the AOA of the wing appropriate for takeoff. On amphibs, you can haul back on the yoke and rotate with full power, takeoff run on wheels is very short.

The Beaver and the Otter (and the Twin Otter) are all real workhorses. Just don't get one behind the power curve on approach, or try to turn around tight without slowing down and deploying flaps.

Some have been converted to the Barron wing as in the Coyote Air airplane, I believe. Supposedly improves turning behavior, though I never found the airplane dangerous to turn in tight spots, as long as you used flap.

Not much if anymore at all than one of the ones in the foreground, and I suspect since yours is very similarly equipped you'd know as well as anyone what that means :lol:

Can't pass up this super rare opportunity to correct MTV :)

Wipaire has an up-gross kit for the piston beaver (Mk I) which takes max gross to 5600lbs and no restrictions while Viking's mod kit for the Mk III has the last 300 pounds of 6000 limited to fuel in the tip tanks. Once you start comparing empty weights between Mk I and Mk III machines you start to find the Mk I having an effectively higher useful load! There is a well known seaplane operator that operates both Mk I and Mk III machines for 6 pax, embarrasing :oops:

Personally I prefer the stock wing on the Mk I (5370 gross with the Kenmore kit) for float-planes, lands much nicer. Viking's Gross weight kit puts a big strap across the top of the wings and some "flow energizer" lift enhancing devices outboard, turns the ship into a bit of a floater in seaplane ops, I no likey.

I have heard some good things about the Baron (Stolairus) wing for land-planes, the cuff is more effective at higher AOA, but have no real experience there.

Re: A photo of the most badass bushplane ever

I love De Havillands. I have bush time in the DHC-6 and loved it. The Beaver is probably the most iconic bush plane ever, even above the Supercub. But the most badass award has to go to the Pilatus Porter PC-6. Big loads into and out of almost anywhere you can think of landing a fixed wing aircraft. If I could have a job flying anything, it would be the PC-6.

The fifth picture down, the white one with the black to grey verticle stripes used to belong to a friend of mine, I've got a few hours in it on Lake Powell back around 1990.

I took care of these in '89. Both had fat tires, and the Otter had a tail ski to help in the mud.

Rob: I knew that Don was the driving force for buying the Beaver but didn't know that was the reason for the "DW" N number --- makes sense now. I love that airplane, it sounds like a mac truck when on final to our airstrip. Below is a picture of that Beaver from our front window. It is a heavy hauler, but doesn't have any trouble with our airstrip.
