advocacy - bribing

I went and donated $20 to every senator and representative that cosponsored the pilot's bill of rights 2 since congress resumed in Sept. Earlier, I had donated to the original sponsors and a few of the follow on cosponsors.

And, in the employer section, I said "none(thanks for their support for ....)" be it S 571 or HR 1062. It was only way i could come up with to tell them why.

It cost me similar to a full day of flying and it certainly doesn't feel as gratifying and I REALLY wish that the money was not going to people †hat are so hating on Obamacare (nowhere far enough in my opinion - single payer option is my solution but Bernie has no concept of reality) - there are a handful of democrats sponsoring the bills which I find somewhat encouraging that the parties can find common ground.

Earlier this year I donated $20 to a southern Ca. state representative because she was instrumental in passing legislation that would allow public use of private land without fear or lawsuit; she called up one night to find out "who the hell" had contributed.

Anybody out there think I am having any effect?

I find it very disheartening that Todd Rokita, an early supporter, now never mentions the issue.

There was a recent update on AOPA if I remember correctly that said the bills were having issues but then I looked today and there was a promising story:

Bribery can't hurt but I fear you're going to need to multiple your donations by 100x to get anyone's attention via that avenue.

Tilting at windmills is unfortunately attractive to me - I've donated $40 so far to Lessig for President on his plank to take back democracy by eliminating PACs: $20 just for support and $20 for bumper stickers.

I was wondering whether any other people had decided to donate to their representatives and let them know why they were donating. The senators and congresspeople certainly don't make it easy to indicate why you are donating.

How do you "donate" to an elected official? I'm guessing you're talking about a contribution to their campaign fund. What if they're not up for re-election?

Re: advocacy - bribing

enter into google search
donate (your senator or representative's name)
all of them will take donations whether or not they are up for reelection

Re: advocacy - bribing

None of my elected officials deserve a donation-- can't think of too damn many that do.
If & when they get some of our problems & issues solved or at least addressed somehow, instead of griping about how either the dems or repubs (whichever party they're not) are keeping that from happening, I might consider it.

Re: advocacy - bribing

I was in the $250 category during the last cycle. I think maybe it's because I'm stupid. I'm certainly not rich. But, never again and you can write that down and check it against the facts later if you like. I'm now on the mailing list for every crackpot knucklehead out there who wants "Ran for President" on his resume. Now Inhofe is drawing up plans to make you qualify for a medical before you can go without one. I don't think I can use the F word here. But to say I'm really disappointed is a mild understatement; and that goes for his horse too. And so it goes. With friends like that, who needs enemies.

It's similar to tipping strippers. You get the same look for $1 as you do for $10. Legally they can't do any more for you either way. And if you give any more than that you are asking for trouble and they will just keep coming back for more.

I do like the fact you are recognizing people for their commitment to a cause at any level.

Re: advocacy - bribing

After my round of giving to those representatives and senators that in September added theirs names as cosponsors to the Pilot's Bill of Rights, I then sent emails to Feinstein, Boxer, and Eschoo describing what I had done and how disappointed I was that I wasn't contributing to them, especially because aviation has been good for California.

I got an email from Representative Anna Eshoo today that she is cosponsoring HR 1062.

Before giving this update, I splurged and donated $25 to her.
