Not having much luck finding either locally. Since you are local do you have any leads for a CFI? I'm considering since the dollar has come up to 0.94 Euro, maybe a new plane purchase like a ICP Savannah? Back when the dollar was only 0.68 of a Euro the US dealer had a retail price of $72K.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

I'm not really all that local, but let me do some digging on CFI.

Have you considered an S6 from Rans? Good planes; Svanarts and GravityKnight are a couple guys here that fly them, and they are trikes. There's a number of 701's here too. There's a guy at 50R that has a completed 701 airframe; just needs an engine and prop and a few other items. I see 750's for sale fairly often, too.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

Has anyone mentioned Lake Riverside Estates just east of Temecula/Murrieta, CA? I looked at and visited this airpark and it would be high on my list if I ever have to move back CA. I think the homes and lots (which there are many lots still available) are priced reasonably for being in SoCal.

You are 100% correct. I used to live just north of there off the 15, typical splendid SoCal weather and 2.5 acre lots < $100K which as you mentioned in SoCal a real bargain.

Finding a CFI close to me is first thing to do. Then finding a plane that said CFI and I can ferry back to my home and get signed off for solo again would be the plan.

We've looked at Lake Riverside, as I can live anywhere in my territory in the SW.

Not very appealing due to the lack of schools (for my five year old), work (for my wife) and devoid of any shopping... 30 minutes to the nearest grocery store.

I wish it would check two of the boxes because I'd LOVE to make an airpark life, unfortunately, there's just nothing for the upper-middle class..especially with kids.

Cameron Park (061) is on my short list. Except for the nasty hill on the north side of the runway and the density altitude in the summer.

P19 is probably where it will end up happening when I finally hit the lotto.

BradleyP,

Your location says Bakersfield, have you looked at the airpark in Valley Acres? (Just northeast of Taft). Only one resident left there with planes, but half a dozen properties or so along a decent long gravel runway. Admittedly though, it's nearly as rural as Lake Riverside.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

Cool little place, but the schools out there are awful and the commute for my wife (she works at Ch. 29 downtown) would be hideous.

You know the other one I always forget about is Sierra Skypark in Fresno... I wonder what the schools are like there.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

To any Pacific North West brothers/sisters, this place is being sold at auction at 10am on April 7th outside the Olympia court house. No minimum, cash buy...foreclosure. I'm not connected in any way with sale nor do I know condition of the place. I live nearby and we would love for a backcountry pilot to take this on. We obviously prefer the buyer to be interested in aviation so thus doesn't happen again. We have a beautiful well drained grass strip with an epic view of Rainer and an incredible modest community of folks. We are in the process of fixing the runway lights with led bulbs. Cougar Mountain Airport 49WA. HOA is $300 per YEAR. PM with any questions.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

I went to the fly-in at Cougar Mountain last summer, and that is indeed a very nice little airpark.
Kinda out in the boonies for those that want to get away from the big city...but not too far away.
I like it up here on the Oly Peninsula but the Yelm area has it's charms too.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

I been lookin for a good air parkin the SW, or a place with property I could fly in and out of, and it has been a bit of a PITA. This one made think maybe I should broaden my search, but I really like the SW. Looks pretty nice. But doesn't it rain up there a lot, and pretty short days through the winter??? Hi humidity too???

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

Not high humidity, or low either.
Not as rainy as some people seem to think, but lots of gray days in the winter.
(and some in the other three seasons as well)

Googled this: http://www.usclimatedata.com/climate/wa ... tates/3217
it says Port Townsend (where I live) gets about 19" of precip a year (seems a bit low).
It says Olympia (west of Cougar Mountain) gets 49" but that seems high.
Puyallup (north of Cougar Mtn) 40.

Yes, pretty short days in the winter.
First day of winter in PT sunrise 759am, sunset 420pm.
But we make up for it later-
first day of summer sunrise 511am, sunset 915pm.

Gary - Mid Valley Airpark (E98) where we live. We call it "paradise" - we need more pilots here.

Would you consider SW New Mexico?

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

The Trike scene here in the SW is rather active and social. I asked Dick my neighbor if he could run his tractor on my property to clear some space for visiting pilot's truck and trailer combos.

Even though I'm just a speck, I like this photo Dick took as it shows some of the structural art some of my neighbors have erected over the years. I don't think you will find this in the high end airparks.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

DO
I prefer SW az over NM. A lot of Restricted areas in NM, and I am pretty familiar with AZ having lived there in the past. I ended up committing myself to an Airpark south of Aguila, about 20 mi west of Wickenburg. Pretty active flying community, lot of 4 wheeling and fairly close to Lake Havasu. It seems relatively affordable, laid back, and I am getting 1800 sq. ft. home, 50'x50' hangar,10 acres, nice 360* SW views, room for visitors. Hoping it will be a good fit.
