AK-451 ELT Replacement
Avionics, airplane covers, tires, handheld radios, GPS receivers, wireless Wx uplink...any product related to backcountry aircraft and flying.
I’ve got the AmeriKing AK-451 ELT that has an AD against it for periodic functional checks.
Has anyone replaced one of these? Looking for some options that will be mostly drop in replacement, where new wires don’t need to be ran. The AK451 has a remote control panel that connects with RJ45.

I replaced my Ameriking with an ACK E-04 121.5/406 MHz ELT. That was several years ago so the details of that install are hazy. IIRC it is similar but somewhat different. Mounted into the same location aft of the left baggage compartment on my C180B. HTH, Ron

I know you said that you did not want to run wires, but on a Cessna 182 it really is quite simple to run wires back to the tail. You may even be able to use the old wiring to help you string it through. And in the case that you ever need to use your ELT, heaven forbid, I'm sure you or your loved ones would greatly appreciate the decrease in time that it takes rescuers to locate you. With the Artex 345 you can run two conductor wire to the panel for the remote switch, unless you have a GPS, then you can run three conductor wire and tie it into the RS232 out from your GPS and have a more accurate location if your ELT ever needs to go off. This is what I have done, and it really was easy to do. Just a suggestion.

I still have an old 121.5 / 243 ELT, but would like to upgrade to a 406.
I'm curious as to how to get a GPS signal to it so it will transmit my location.
I used to run a Garmin 196, but for quite a while now I navigate using a tablet running a moving map app, so no RS232 available.
Is there a way to connect a stand-alone GPS antenna or receiver to the ELT?
I also run a Garmin G5, connected to an external antenna--
maybe it has an RS232 out connection?

Why couldn’t the existing same wires be used with the new ELT & switch?
I’d also say being able to piggyback your GPS is half the reason to go 406

The AK451 ELT uses RJ-12 cable, which looks similar to telephone cable. The Artex installation requires a minimum of 22 gage wire to be ran.
It would be nice if they were the same
