Aktahoe - Adventures in a Backcountry Super Cub Rev 2

Changed the name here from the idea and build to adventures. Follow along. This all started May 2015.

Here is were its starts:

Not really...she finally said yes, so I struck while the iron was hot!

I have come very close to getting a couple of different cubs over the past year or two and they just did not seem wright. With a lot of careful research and time spent, the experimental SQ just kept making more sense.

Yesterday I finally met with Bruce at Backcountry Supercubs and officially made my order for a new SQ2. My buddy here who some of you know ordered one back in December and it was delivered yesterday. He is building his down in Stead. Timing worked out as a fella just backed out on one that has been being and Bruce let me have it. I am having some various mods put into it but delivery date is sometime around July 10. Once received I will start the build thread.

I hope that I am not jumping in over my head as I have never built an airplane but we do have some very good builders here in Truckee that have committed to helping me make it happen.

After speaking with Barnstormer, Randy Goza, Ranchpilot and others this aircraft seems like a build that I can get through. Even more so after seeing how much is completed when the kit arrives. I will hire out the covering to C. King if he wants to do it and Kevin Eldridge seems like the man when it comes to engines. TK Racing does the suspension on the Just Aircraft and did Breedens as well. Seems like a no brainer. The SQ folks are going to start using that fork exclusively as of yesterday it appears and also having the chance to meet them in person with Bruce just made my final decision that much easier.

Anyhow, it's official...I cannot wait to get started.

Congrats Kevin, What a machine! I've always been impressed with the SQ's, and your list of "mods" sounds like a recipe for a really fun bird.

Yes the suspension gear but installed to the bottom of the door instead of all the way up to the window, still allowing 8-12" of travel if I'm correct.

Re: I'm in big trouble...the SQ2

Oh boy, this should be interesting!

No matter how much of the build you sub out, and how complete/pre fabbed the kit is, it's still a HUGE project. You certified plane boys..... though you've been flying for years and may be around experimentals a lot really don't have a full concept of what us guys who build their own planes, go through to build. Whenever I see someone who crashes his Cessna, and has hull insurance, and a few weeks later is back in the air in a similar plane, I think "must be nice". If I crash my plane, no matter who pays and when and how, it's still going to be a year or so to get back in the air. Having said all that, (mid point you may be re thinking this decision, don't, just expect it to cost more and take longer then you now think) there is nothing like having you're own custom plane exactly how you want it.

Great choice Kevin, we all expect great things to come of this! You'll get a kick out of a visit to the Douglas plant, if you haven't already been there, lots of real interesting things to see there.

That's awesome Kevin! I'd love to build a plane one day, but for now the wife says no. One day I hope she'll finally say yes.
