Alaska Floatplane Video 2020

Folks

I tend to lurk here and don't post very often, but I follow you guys pretty close.

Here is a video of my time flying floats in Alaska this past summer.

It is a Javron Cub, on Wip 2100A amphibs. The cabins you see in the video rent for around 50 dollars a night. I spent all my vacation this last summer flying around the SE part of Alaska and staying in these cabins.

I hope you enjoy it, and for you guys building "Backcountry" type airplanes I hope it helps keep the fire going.

Hope this helps......motivate

Bill,

Great video! That is what you call "living the dream" in my opinion. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Alaska Floatplane Video 2020

Pretty rare I watch one of these videos right through. I gotta say, that was beautiful, very challenging flying depicted (we operate on the north coast of BC on floats, and that looks like our back yard), and frankly most watching it probably won’t quite grasp the planning and logistics you sorted. Nice adventure and well documented, I like how you focused on the people, and know to keep it to a few minutes as that’s all the modern attention span can handle.

Very, very well done, and appears you well know what you’re up to in that super cub, lotta folks wouldn’t be confident heading into some of those spots so bravo. What was the elevation of the highest lake, and how did the supercub fare at altitude when you took her up a bit?

Again, inspiring video, love seeing planes get used right. Especially on floats.

Great video. Really enjoyed it. Is that the Sensenich wood prop you have on your plane? If so, how do you like it?

Re: Alaska Floatplane Video 2020

It looks like it could be a Catto prop as well.

Re: Alaska Floatplane Video 2020

Thanks all for the kind words. It is a Catto 84-43. Been flown a lot, literally several hundred hours in the rain, and about 800 on floats, and it looks like new. That nickel leading edge really works well.

It was quite a summer and I was Blessed to have several friends come up and fly with me.

Re: Alaska Floatplane Video 2020

How long was your trip? I would love to just go tool around and explore the many public use cabins in the state. I am really amazed that folks take such good care of them, every time I have used one there is fire wood left in the stove and it has been swept and clean. They are really unknown values of our state.

Headoutdaplane

I have been Blessed to spend 5 summers in Alaska, mostly in the Southeast. I have a lot of vacation so I am able to spend a couple of weeks in AK, leave the plane in Juneau, go back to work for a week or two then back to AK. May,June July, Aug and Sept. This last summer I spent 70 days in AK. Yes, I know, that is insane, and trust me I am not complaining. I am very Blessed.

The highest lake I have operated from in the SE with full gear and people is the Black Bear Lake on Prince of Wales Island at 1900'. The Cub does great. I do not have to lift a float and even at 2300 gross I am usually off the water in 20 to 25 seconds. The combo of 180hp, Catto, a Cub, and Wip amphibs seems to really perform. I have flown at close to gross (say 2200pds) over the mountains at 12.5K. Admittedly that is about as high as she will go at that weight but it seems to do just fine.

Here is another video you might enjoy......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=908-QKr ... e=youtu.be

Thanks for your interest and kind words
