Alvord Desert

How about a get together at Alvord Desert or some other place on Oct 20th. Give or take a weekend. Was thinking of going to Baja about then but not sure I want to fly that far.

Works for me

Tim,

Sounds good. I had planned to go to Reno then, but high school football, and weekend before Elk season scrubbed any plans to head there. I really want to get down there to meet John and check out his shop.

Anyway if you do head this way keep me posted. I'd fly out for the day, not sure if I'd camp.

See ya, Bub

You got to camp. If not there is no reason to bring out the hot links. Any weekend in October is good for me but the first.

I'm watching your plans with interest. I'm out there most weekends Oct.-Jan. chasing chukars. We fly when weather permits. I'd love to stop in and meet you guys.

Alvord

Well Tim? Hows it looking for the 20th? I'm keeping a good eye on the weather. Saturday the 29th we had 21 degrees  for a low in the morning.

Might have to pack some cold weather gear for the Alvord. We've even had snow flakes, with some of the surrounding mountains having a light dusting of the white stuff. 8)

Then I'm hopeing the 182 will be out of the shop by then to. :(

If LMT makes it up we could BBQ chuckers.

That weekend is still good for me. When is Alvord too wet for landing. What is the plane in the shop for, it was in at the JC fly in as I recall.

Looking forward to solving all of the problems over a camp fire. Looks like I have to drive to Grants Pass for some hot links unless we can get Zane to pick some up on his way to Alvord.

Ug! Annual time. Things looking good so far. Most likely a $1800 to $2200 when it's over. Biggest item was a carburator $910, then a egt probe $100, heat element for the pitot tube $95, and a couple of little odds and ends. I didn't make it to JC, so it were'nt me :( One of these days though...

From what I can tell as long as you're landing in the light tan ground you'll be OK. If it's a darker brown lookout! It's mud. I'd say stay about a couple hundred yards from the wet line and one would be OK. If I get a chance I'll buzz down and take a look. I had the 180 down there quite a bit when I had it, but that was 6 years ago. I haven't had the 182 there yet. Just haven't had the time.

Last time I was on the Alvord I was riding dirt bikes, if you hit it hard enough you can get through the mud  But one winds up pretty dirty.

What are hot links? Are they like little smokies?

Hot Links

Hot links are like a real ugly looking hot dog. A butcher shop in Grants Pass by the name of Cartwrights Meet make them. They use real pork gut casing and just stuff real high quality product in them along with their special blend of spices.

I used them for my contribution at JC fly in and a guy from Arlington that had Bush Wheels on his 182 thought they were the best thing going.

I generally bring these to most campouts and other cool events.

Try to make it Zane

Life is good. Life is better with wings.

I'm thinking about it, but the plane is all opened up for annual right now, but I am short an IA. I stand to save about $800 if I can wait 2-3 weeks for another IA to get back to town. That's a lot of gas money.

That's a nice description of the Alvord. The worst error was reporting 80 degree summer temperatures. It's more like 90-100.

Slim chance I may be goin ta McCall that weekend. Wx ?!?
Just in case, where in the A Desert would I possibly find the bunch of ya.
A vague idea should be good enough, like north end, east side, etc.

Of course the question assumes that ya all's get along well enough to share a desert. The answer is not a real clearly woven message with some of the threads recently seen warping and woofing their way in and out of some of the postings.

Well we have gotten a bit of rain in the Shasta Valley. Supposed to rain more. Wonder if Alvord is going to be a bit too soggy for an event. Anybody that is local to Alvord have any data.

As of Thursday last week the Alvord was still dry and kicking up mega dust near the edge.

Tried the hot tub and was toooo hot to sit in past one beer.

Alvord update

Well spent most the day on the Alvord riding dirt bikes. :P Yee ha. Temps around 55 with a light wind from the south. Only damp spot is where water runs out of the hot springs onto the desert floor. :D Just a great day.

However looking at NWS 7 day forecast shows rain later in the week. And the top of the Steens had some fresh white stuff. :(

And if you all do come in, Saturday the 20th is a Chili cook off contest, along with an Apple pie contest. Downtown Burns. From noon till 4 or 5. Anyway I won't be flying into the Alvord as I'm entered in the Chili cook off. Giving some thought to a pie too. We have to cook the Chili on the spot, 5 gallons worth for each team. Last year we had 7 teams. Come to the contest buy a bowl and sample the wares.

Fly safe, Bub
