Alvord Desert
Get together with other pilots or enthusiasts. Plan it or get info about it here.
The Pacific Northwest Pilot's forum had a recent post about a flyin/campout in the Alvord desert of SE Oregon. The pictures they posted were spectacular. This is just a cross-post, but I'll definitely be there to take my own pictures next year! The composite shots of airplanes at night with the Milky Way in the background are NOT double exposures. The are purportedly a 20 second exposure of the natural setting with a quick sweep of the parked plane with a headlamp, or the green laser. WOW!

I'm going to be heading up to Spokane just prior to the High Sierra Fly-in. I was thinking of camping in the Alvord Desert on my way back down to 3SS. Can anybody recommend any good camping spots here?

Wow! Cool pics. This is a place I really would like to check out. If you stop and camp, let us know where and how it goes.

Always so helpful.
I was kind of expecting that after I posted though.

That's fine I'll find a spot.

Individuals from the Pacific Northwest Flying forum are gathering for another Alvord Desert Flyin the weekend of 8/14-16. I'll be flying down there early with a stop in Prineville, OR to join other friends at the Oregon Star Party on 8/11-13. I'll cath the Perseid Meteor Shower with the astronomy geeks and then join the plane geeks at the Alvord for the weekend. Any other BCPers headed that way on those dates? The PNW Flyers will be using 123.0 as the advisory frequency on the playa, and will be setting up camp with a windsock. Some have suggested the NE corner of the dry lake bed because there are mounds there for some privacy. I don't know if that is where folks will actually wind up though.
