I was hoping by some miracle that it would coincide with my few available days in July...but not this time...again...maybe next year. Hope you guys have a great time!

Bump.

It's coming up this Saturday, and the weather outlook is promising. I'll be there unless something comes up.

I would like to make it this year if all gos well. Weather has not looked to promising this summer. How are the fires doing in your neck of the woods DP?

Re: Annual Lake Minchumina AK Rock Skipping 7/28

No close fires. We had some haze last week. Just had a little rain come through and clear the air though.

Hope you can make it. Good, homespun fun off of the road system.

Re: Annual Lake Minchumina AK Rock Skipping 7/28

Well, it was a great time, great weather, and a big turnout yesterday. Didn't see anybody else sporting BCP colors. There was a big Maule contingent. I counted either 13 or 14 visiting planes. That's pretty good for our neck of the woods.

I was going to post the forecast yesterday, but that coincided with the site maintenance outage. Hope everyone else in the region at least got out and made good use of the day. It was glorious.

Cheers,

Re: Annual Lake Minchumina AK Rock Skipping 7/27

Found this thread from last year. I believe the 37th Annual Lake Minchumina Rock Skipping Competition is on Saturday, 27 July. I haven't been able to verify it though. Can anyone confirm the date, and does anyone plan on attending?

Re: Annual Lake Minchumina AK Rock Skipping 7/28

I hate to miss it, but I don't think I'll have a flyable bird this year. Last year someone there said that they're on facebook, so you might check there if you have access.

edit- I just left a couple phone messages with people out there. I'll post what I learn. BTW, they had a big fire come pretty near on the Northeast lakeshore. I think it's quieted down a lot, fortunately.

Dad-Gummit! I had to leave on a short notice TDY Monday. I'm supposed to travel back on Friday night, but don't expect to get back until Saturday morning. I hope I can work it out. DP, will you make it?

Bummer...I can't see it working...every year I imagine I'm going to be able to get up there. Maybe next year.

I don't have a ride as of now, and I also have some commitments, so probably don't expect me there. I did get your PM Brett- thanks for that. If anyone else is going, DO land on the main Rwy (02-20 or something like that). Sometimes if the grass has been mowed then planes will taxi down the closed X-wind runway to the far end. The event is held beyond the end of the closed runway on the far spit of land. Do bring something for the potluck, and realize that there are no FBO services. If the pilot log is still in the phone shack by the runway, then please sign in- it may be useful to show the use that the runway receives. In fact, mail several items from the post office while you are there- they are fighting to maintain support for that service as well.

Today's the day, and it's starting out as a gorgeous one. Not sure of my plans yet- hopefully they get a good turnout though.

Well, there's five away planes that are visible in the web cam, and that doesn't even show the end of the closed runway, or the other two-thirds of the main parking area. Glad someone's having fun. The winners of the stone skipping have a dunk in the lake to look forward to!

Re: Annual Lake Minchumina AK Rock Skipping 7/28

DP,

It was a great time. Eight aircraft on the main ramp and two at the end of the other runway. What an amazingly gracious crew those minchominions are. My son won the kids division and was given a heave into the lake. He loved it. We got some photos of him with his trophy before he agreed that it shou,d stay there or next year's competition. Carol gave the kids canoe rides all the way up and down the spit. I'll post some pics tomorrow. Tremendous day with the family. I'll be deployed next year, so I talked to some folks about rides for Liz and the kids.

Brett,
Sounds great. Good showing by your son! I think I've made it there 8 of the last 10 years or so. Will have to make a point to return next year. I missed my game of horseshoes!
