Skalywag wrote:Here's some pics from flyin around in TX this afternoon...most land is private but most runway owners that fly love backcountry type aircraft and it's rare to get denied permission to land if you are respectful and friendly. I've been flying in the western Big Bend region and central TX Hill Country almost 3 years and still find new adventures and challenges every time out. Big Bend has over 1.2 million acres of public land and there is even a paved strip at the state park headquarters. Texas has a very active GA scene and really great friendly people. If you like flying and guns you will have no trouble making friends ;)

How about New Hampshire or Maine? We have the Ocean, Mountains, and plenty of off airport action.

Re: Any backcountry flying in TX?

Thanks rw2, I have heard about the hill country, but I didn't know much. Never been there. Sure looks nice.

Mau, one of my favorite places in the lower 48 is Maine. But, my wife doesn't want to be in a place that snows, and I also need to be close to a major international airport where I can take a non-stop flight to El Salvador (minor detail I failed to mention).

A couple or three times a year my wife and I fly over to Aransas pass NE of Corpus Christi Tx. It is a short walk to the beach with a cooler or you can catch the bus into town for some fresh seafood. Eat good, play in the surf for a few hours and be back in san antonio in 45 min for a hot shower. There are a lot of grass strips also and it seems like every one of them has a fly in a t least once a year. After you meet the owners once most are more than happy to let you use the strip. There are also lots of airparks.

Buck, both you and Barnstormer have mentioned Aransas. I guess I need to take look!

And if that isn't enough to peak your interest in Port Aransas, well there is always Motorsports. Not to be out done by Houston's NHRA Spring Nationals, nor Austin's Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, Port Aransas has Belt Sander Racing.

Yep, that's exactly what I thought.

My brother and I play on the Brazos River almost daily. There are hundreds of landing spots there and as someone else mentioned, with the drought there are lots of areas along the rivers and lakes that are mainly public lands. Also some neat strips down in the Davis Mountains. Of course as you meet people it opens up even more. We were out chasing hogs and checking out the gravel bars last night. Always fun after some rain to see what washed up.

Now, that's what I wanted to hear, Steve. I sent you a PM here or at SC, I don't remember.

Re: Any backcountry flying in TX?

Patinloco, sorry for slow response, I am out in Far West TX. Our strip is on sectional 5TE1, contact info is wrong though I need to update all that.

RW2, yes mostly, but there are alot of fun spots on the fringes of that map and further west that I am calling the Hill Country as well.

Piper painter, that pic is one of these spots that only exists when the lakes are low, as Jughead mentioned. All I will say is its NW of Austin, mostly cause I wouldn't encourage anyone to land there that doesn't know what to watch for...like some A-hole that keeps stretching logs across the LZ, danger!

Re: Any backcountry flying in TX?

Skalywag definetly knows a lot of the cool places in Texas to fly loco. He and I would be tearing up a lot more air together around here if I was a single man. :P
Texas is awesome but for sure a lot more difficult to have a day of leisurely "backcountry" flying in your backyard. Again unless your Skalywag.
He lives in the best area for that kind of flying in my opinion in texas. My favorite place to fly in this state by far! Only thing that comes close to some of the stuff in other states. But very isolated and not near any international airports. Which is one of the things that make it so awesome. Very isolated.
Looking forward to some flying out there in couple weeks. can't wait! Maybe we can post some pics.
I love living in Texas but truely envy the flying out west!
