Tieton, Stehekin, Lost River, Lake Wenatchee, Easton, Bandera, Skykomish... All of those are fairly close to the Seattle area.

Consider Copalis Beach, probably the only beach airport in the U.S. check the tide tables before you go and fly over it to make sure people are not in the landing area. Land on the dark sand or else.

In your 182, you might be able to squeeze 1 or 2 Idaho strips in a day from Seattle area. In July, it stays daylight till about 10:00-10:30pm. I've from from Boise to the Arlington Air Show (north of Seattle) and back to Boise in a day flying my 182.

But, rushing a Idaho trip in one day from Seattle wouldn't be fun. I'd plan for 2 full days at the very least. Top 3 suggestions for you would be Johnson Creek, Sulphur Creek (breakfast) and Smiley Creek (breakfast or lunch). And McCall or Cascade for fuel.

Re: Any backcountry strips in Washington?

Hmm. Running all the way to Idaho for a day seems like a stretch from Seattle. But have fun if you do. The ride back over Eastern Washington can be a real kidney puncher in the afternoon though.

The strips in Washington mentioned by Rob would keep most folks' jaws on the floor of the cockpit from the scenery alone for several days.

The north Cascades are mind-blowing enough. No reason to fly in a straight line all the way to Idaho just for one day.

Has anyone been to Point Roberts, 1RL? Ever since I found it on the VFR chart I have thought it would be fun to go look North, West and South to Canada.

I concur! Especially if time is limited. Save Idaho for another time if the primary focus of the trip is to Seattle the area for a short time frame.

Heck, there's lots of great options between Costa Rica and Seattle as it is.

A flight around Mt St Helen's is a must along that route, too!

I used to go into Pt Roberts (1RL) all the time. If you can land to north and take off south (wind permitting) Also in the winter it is very soft, great in spring/summer. Also ICE (customs and border protection)really keeps an eye on the traffic in and out of 1RL, don't ask me why I know this :D

I was there a few years ago when I had a place there, Strip was good turf, I've had a # of different birds in there, up to a 56TC Baron.
The guy that runs the strip and put it back on the map is a Canadian pilot!! Great Guy. =D>
