Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

So I am going to Cabo next month and stopping at Alfonsinos on the way down for a night. I will be going from VCB ---> MMSF (San Felipe) then on to Alfonisnos for a night followed by Los Cabos Internations MMSD, since MMSL is outragously expensive! Anyway, I am wondering if anyone has any good info on exactly what to expect when I get to say San Felipe. It would seem like my fees for entry/permit/immigration/BOHICA is going to be around $115.USD roughly (2 People). Does this sound right? I never realized it would be so difficult to find information on something simple as fuel prices, but if you have that let me know, or a source! Can't wait! Thanks guys!

Have you checked with Baja Bush Pilots or any desire to? They have a section on fuel prices. May have to be a member though.

Float Flyer Wilson goes down there every winter, but he sold his 185 & floats so he's probably staying too drunk to participate here (is that possible?)
Haven't seen any smartass comments since the election, maybe he's changed his zip code to Baja.

Hey Ford, whazzup?

Haven't been down thy way in 2 years, but since your not getting much info...
Price sounds bout right, we did immigration at Ensenada, $50 or so & out the door. San Felipe fuel was a little higher, spent the night at Alfonsinos, there was a bunch of us there, they locked us in the bar & went to bed, wrote down what we drank & paid in the AM with breakfast! :)

Great place & amazing view, Nice warm breeze off the Bay all night.

The Baja 1000 was just this last weekend. I'm sure a bunch of people flew down there and back. But probably not members here though.

Re: Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

I let my Baja Bush Pilot member ship laps. Here are a few things I remember from my trip 2 years ago. Don't be in a hurry, be nice, have Pesos. It will take an hour to get through gas and customs at San Felipe. The Army directed us to the gas line where they checked our ID and got gas. Then we went inside.

When I was there gas was $3.50 shortly after we got home the Mexican government raised it over night to match US prices. Insurance has to say valid in Mexico!!!!

Alfonsinos is great although the rooms could be way nicer. Park as high up as you can the runway can flood at high tide. Call ahead for a room, we almost had to sleep under the wing. M7flyers wife speaks fluent Spanish, she saved us and got us a room!

At Alfonsinos the Army DID show up to check us out. We didn't know they would come there so we left. That was not one of our better decisions.

My favorite town was Mulege and Hotel Serenidad.

All things considered I don't think I'll be going back. Beautiful country, some wonderful people. But now that gas is the same as the US whats the point. I see to many ways to get into trouble. Serious trouble. The US SW is just as nice, I can camp in the desert at a dirt strip and take all the GUNS I want. You can't even think of doing that in Mexico. I have a desire to see Texas too.

Baja Bush Pilot site has lots of good free info.

Re: Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

I go down there for work quite a bit. no idea on light aircraft prices. things are a little more tense than usual stay at the large airports and mostfolks down there don't want 100$ bills because (from what they tell me) the bank wont convert them into pesos, they assume the only people with 100s are cartel types... so bring small bills. go into MMSL they have their act together and are great people. a little $$$ tho but they take credit cards! be careful have fun!

Re: Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

Well it looks like I'll be going to MMSD since MMSL actually charged more for services and they also had higher car rental prices & gas prices. Gas at MMSL was $6.40 and at MMSD its 1.34 per L wich is around $5.something. So I will drive 40 min to Cabo San Lucas. I would prefer not to even use the FBO's and just tie down and deal with stuff myself but I don't think you can do that in those locations. Oh well it'll be fun.

Rob: I think you are correct! I am excited for this trip but I think after I'll just stick to the Bahamas or something better than Mexico! haha Although I may end up back at the San Francisquito and Alfonsinos if I like them. Oh and I'll be going to SF instead of Alf, at least that's the new plan!

haha Well it has some beautiful beaches and it's a helluva lot closer than the Bahamas. I'd much rather go to the Bahamas! But you know, sometimes the closer wins!

Re: Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

I've had some good times at alfonsino's but that was last century. That was my favorite, Punta San Francisco is second and Seranidad is real fun to. Alota history, but until Mexico can get on the same page as the rest of the world Ill stay here in the states. Clearing the port of entry you must have peso's now I believe. Thake no guns and make sure you have no bullets either and empty your ash tray :D when they are searching your plane at San Felipe if you give them a real coke they usually will stop early.

I'm sure you've researched it Brian, you need you PP license, medical, airworthiness cert, registration, insurance cents that specify coverage in Mexico, if its in Spanish that's even better. Plan on paying an airway fee $50, landings fee used to be $8 for a single, visa $22.50 each person. Convert your money before you get there or you'll have to go to town to exchange it I think. Passport :!: oh ya bail money too  have fun.

Let us know when you go and run your SPOT so we can track your plane if they steal it

geez what a royal pain in the ass to go to the beach...I'll be thinking of you after tuesday... I'll be relaxing on a beach in Hawaii till 10 December with a adult beverage in hand and I won't need a passport or coke or peso's or special insurance coverage...nor will I be worried about drug cartels or losing my Maule, which will be safely tucked in it's hangar in San Diego...

There's some things haywire with this country too, but we're all here supporting it full-time with our gringo dollars. If I went by your thinking, I could never go down to visit my relatives in Kalifornia. :P

Re: Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

I was there a couple weeks ago. Cleared customs both ways in SF.
$70 annual registration fee. Expires 12/31 so you won't get any more use out of it. Also if you come back after the first, you will have to pay it again for 2013. Guest fee of $25 (I think might be $22 or $27). Landing fee $7. Seems like there were a couple more small fees. Pretty smooth process. They look hard at the registration info. Make sure you have airworthiness and Reg. Pilots license and medical. No need for radio operators.
Insurance is huge. Your policy is fine so long as it has mexico listed in "other territories".
No night VFR. Gun toting teenagers dressed as federalies will meet you at the airplane. Check your pilots license out before you proceed. Save your written flight plan for reference incase you get checked out along the way.
Take lots of singles and $5s for tipping. They won't charge your tourist fee until your return.
Fuel is available at SF but we opted not to get it.
Have fun.
