Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

There's some things haywire with this country too, but we're all here supporting it full-time with our gringo dollars. If I went by your thinking, I could never go down to visit my relatives in Kalifornia. :P

Who says I go to California? Born there, third generation born there. My Dad used to say he was the first one smart enough to leave....

It's interesting how much of the other States look like and act like California?

I.e. The Crypts in Wisconsin were looking pretty tough when I drove thru up to OSH.

Re: Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

I can't believe that I missed this thread!! Nimpo Cub is correct, I sold the 185 this past September and I am not happy about it but life does goes on.

"Why would anyone in this country voluntarily visit Mexico, and support all that is so wrong with that country with Gringo $$$$?

MTV" I feel the same way about Texas and Misssissippi, but that is what makes for horse racing.

I have been flying into Mexico since the early 80's and probably have more than 200 trips down there. I have had more hassles flying into Canada than Mexico even as a Landed Immigrant of CA. The hassles I am referring to is with Customs in both countries. I speak better Canadian than I do Spanish but that doesn't seem to matter.

Back to the topic of flying into Mexico. I virtually always cleared customs in Mexicali. This was mainly due to my experience that MXL was less agressive in inspecting the plane for inbound duty items. Because I have had a place in Baja since the mid 80's, I ALWAYS enter Baja with a fully loaded plane with goods that I either can't buy in Mexico or is so much more expensive that it bothers me greatly. IF one is flying into Mexico as a tourist and are just bringing the normal "tourist" stuff, I don't think it really matters where you clear.

San Felipe has run out of fuel more often than the rest of the AOE airports in Baja combined. Of course in the past far more planes were flying south of the border than they have been doing the past number of years. I think this is because of the economy and the well publicised border violence and just the overall reduction in GA flying in general. The difference in price of avgas between the US and MX recently certainly has not encouraged Mexican flying, but has consistently been a dollar/gal cheaper.

One last comment of plane security, many know that I had a 77 T-210 stolen in Baja in '04 and an attempt was made on my 185 in '05. I feel strongly that "normal" locks on high desirable drug running planes are a waste of time. #1, insure your plane for it's replacement value, this for the US & MX. If not, liability only. #2 even in the US, I used a hidden kill switch for overnight parking. In MX disabling the plane was my goal. Besides the kill switch I removed a function part and replaced it with a dummy. Yeah, I know the anti MX guys will say "if you have to go to that much trouble, why go?" Personal decision. Why some will jump out of planes with "sheets" tied to them, and others won't fly in a plane with less than 3 engines.

So, if you decide to go, have a great time. If you don't, have a great time as well. I'll try and avoid bashing the decisions that others make that are contrary to mine, even though it is amazing at the diversity of opinions and the total lack of common sense in those idiots! #-o

Ah, Ford, I knew you'd show up here sooner or later.

For the record, there's a lot of places I don't go. Then again, there are so many fantastic places where there aren't folks routinely trying to steal your airplane, or skyjack your airplane as you taxi out for takeoff....how do those fake parts work in that scenario?

I respect folks' right to travel wherever they choose. My brother recently completed a trip that included Egypt and Jordan.....sheesh!!

Whatever winds your watch, but a news flash: There are LOTS of places out there that are wonderful to visit and they don't shoot at you.

Having travelled by LandRover around the world three times through other peoples war zones and travelled via Maules in many countries, and then some more countries in commercial jet (over 110 countries of a possible 193), I have to say I have never been shot at.
I have been threatened and robbed more times in the beautiful, honest, corruption less, perfectly balanced, non drug useing/trading, free gun toting USA than anywhere else.
Even my ship voyages all over the world have only produced robbery in a US port in AK no less.
Sorry, but had to put some balance in this thread to help protect the world.

I guess everybody has their own luck. I guess I've been extremely lucky because I've been truckin for almost 30 years and almost 1.75 million miles and have been in some of the roughest big towns in the U.S. Including Bronx, NYC, Atlanta, Chicago, Philly, Cleveland to name a few. Oh yeah, SoCal, too :D But I've never had one issue with anybody. I did have a bad feel for a couple of places, but I took care of business and got the hell outa there! I still wouldn't hesitate to run loads up into the northeast including NYC. You just gotta know where your going, offload, reload and get the hell outa there. But of coarse it might help being a plus size fella and not affraid to snag some punk kids cheeseburger and fries! :D

I can tell you one place I feel very unsafe and nobody in the right mind should even think of going to. That would be anywhere in Nevada!! Now that's a crap hole you may never make it out alive

I will be going from VCB ---> MMSF (San Felipe) then on to Alfonisnos for a night followed by Los Cabos Internations MMSD, since MMSL is outragously expensive! Anyway, I am wondering if anyone has any good info on exactly what to expect when I get to say San Felipe. It would seem like my fees for entry/permit/immigration/BOHICA is going to be around $115.USD roughly (2 People). Does this sound right? I never realized it would be so difficult to find information on something simple as fuel prices, but if you have that let me know, or a source! Can't wait! Thanks guys!

So Brian how was your trip :D

We got rocketed in Iraq.. But, I didn't take personally. My buddy had one come thru the window and it did't explode! Nice pictures of him and the rocket 30" from his head.

But, I would not go to my old hangouts in Mexico.

Been through Memphis hundreds of times. I've stopped for fuel at the truck stops in West Memphis a bunch of times at all hours of the day and night. Again, no problems because in and outa there. I only parked there a few times because of being out of hours. But yeah, not a place I'd want to hang out very long.

Been to NOLA a bunch of times. Now that is a scary town! In fact one year we were there for a Supercross and one of our other transport drivers almost got beat up by a cop. But the driver has always had a big mouth and we was doing something he shouldn't have. Again , NOLA was one of those towns were we did our show and got the hell outa there. :D

Nothing so comforting as listening to folks peddle cocaine over channel 19 while driving through memphis. It's a lovely city... to drive away from.

Come on Mike, you know better than to suggest that spending money in another country is the same as supporting the things that are wrong with it.

Find me a country that's perfect. There isn't one. Mexico, like the US, has great weather, great food, and hospitable people - there are lots of things to like about both countries. Mexico, like the US, has crime, disease, and corruption - there are lots of things to dislike about both countries.

If a guy wants to go to another country to vacation that's his business. Don't hassle him because the things he wants to do aren't the same as the things you want to do.

Re: Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

Eric,

I call bullshit. Sorry, but Ford and I have had this conversation, and he assured me how safe his little part of Mexico is. Right after that, a family was plane jacked as they prepared to leave that strip. Fortunately, the druggies let them get their kids out of the airplane before they departed with it.

Guess whose insurance just went up a click with the total loss of a C 210? Everyone's.

Did you note every comment of advice here said to take lots of small bills to pay to get anything done?

The government of Mexico is totally corrupt. Every bit of "tips" you leave there encourages that behavior.

Meanwhile, half the country of Mexico seems intent on invading THIS country illegally to get away from that hole.

So, drop all those Gringo $$$ you can in Mexico. Been ther, got a gun shoved in my face, not dumb enough to go back. Insure the hell out of your airplane though, so it doesn't hurt you too much when they steal it....just our rates.

And don't leave your kids in the plane for two seconds....those are worth money ya know.

Sheesh.

When are we going to learn that this shit doesn't happen if we don't feed it?

I really love the old Mexico. But, now I agree with MTV.

The places in Baja where we used to surf, sail and camp are a war zone. :x

Re: Anybody been to Mexico in the last 2 Months?

Spent a lot of time in Memphis and New Orleans - never felt uncomfortable either place but agree you need to maintain situational awareness. Spent about 4 hours in Mexico about 15 years ago with some pals. Glad a couple of them were ex special forces types. Would never go back!

About 10 years ago, a young lady who worked for me when to Mexico with her boyfriend. I ended up paying the ransom to get the boyfriend back from the federales. Admittedly, both of these incidents happened in the border region. Back in the 70s, my wife lived for a time in Mexico City and loved it.

Guess I agree with MTV though - why support a corrupt, violent country that has brought so much of its crime and poverty across the border to the US?

Best,
O2
