Anything going on in NM?

The wife, kids, dog, cat, myself and 180 will be gradually relocating to Albuquerque from Denver over the next month or two.

Looking like I’ll be at Sandia or Moriarty most likely, slight chance if putting it at Mid Valley.

Anyone in the area?

I flew out of Moriarty in 2006. FBO was a nice guy and glider instructor. Bifold door hanger was $150 per month. I-40 is a high speed trail to ABQ. Housing is cheaper and desert is present.

All good but my choice would be Mid-Valley. Nice flying community, and you avoid the east mountain winds.

NM Pilots Association http://www.nmpilots.org

Pretty active group and if you'll check the events calendar on their website there's a few things coming up. They have a Back Country committee that has made some good achievements with the RAF, etc.

Mid Valley is a nice little airfield; got gas there once. I do like the eastern side of the mountains better than the Rio Grande side (more grazing, wildlife, etc)

The wind really rocks in the spring (March-April); 60 mph is not unusual.

Lots of really beautiful and interesting places in NM, much of which is even better by air.

I know I can get in at Mid Valley but trying to finagle something at Sandia or Moriarty. I’ll see them all in person for the first time Friday.

Re: Anything going on in NM?

Winds at Mid Valley are generally better than most of the surrounding airports, sitting down in the bottom of the valley. I haven't been into Sandia, but with only an east/west runway, crosswinds can frequently be challenging. When we looked at Moriarty there weren't many/any options for renting our own hangar, but that was last summer; most of the hangars are larger there, so renting a corner of a hangar is more likely. We ended up living on the south side of Albuquerque, so Mid Valley worked out best for us and we enjoy the short drive down there. I know of 1 T hangar available for rent currently at Mid valley ($215, it think).

Re: Anything going on in NM?

I like the Moriarty airport a bunch for stopovers. It can be challenging on weekends with the pattern filling up with a gaggle of gliders. Most of the glider pilots are very good natured and super high time pilots. I would just not be thrilled with driving up and down the grade back to the valley, battling it out with trucks every time. I-40 gets to be almost a river of trucks at times. Sounds like you will be in the south side, so Double Eagle is probably not an option. It is nice to fly out of as a lot of the interesting scenery is to the north (my opinion). It just seems that the prices there are a bit higher. ABQ Approach in that quadrant also seems a bit high strung.

Albuquerque is one of those places with a rich history of GA airfields all lost to progress now. But does look like some good backcountry opportunities not too far off in the area.

Mid Valley is a short ride from Albuquerque with cheap fuel and affordable hangar rental. Certainly wold be my choice if not Double

Fiddler,

Thanks for the old photos of Coronado and Alameda airports. Brings back memories. The only show quality airplane l ever owned was a Tri-Pacer rebuilt by Doug Rinehart. He was in Farmington then. I didn't know his dad, I assume, at Alameda.
