Aviat Aircraft has come aboard as a site sponsor!

Please join me in welcoming Aviat Aircraft into the fold as an official sponsor of BCP.

In the event you've been under a rock for the last 30 years, Aviat manufactures the 2-seat tandem Husky in their Afton, Wyoming factory, and are on their 4th revision, the A1-C.

I even did a little float flying action with a Husky owner this summer back in Minnesota, soon to be seen in our new short film.

If this partnership happens to lead you to their door and you open your wallet, please remind them that BCP helped out. Thanks!

Zane,

I was unable to google any connection to the Calls of Afton, who designed my favorite airplane: the CallAir A9.
Did these guys know the Call family?

Jim,

The Aviat factory IS the old Call Air factory, but I don't think there's really any direct connection between the current owner and the Call family.

When Frank Christiansen started Aviat, his chief engineer had been the Calls' engineering chief......Herb Anderson, I think.

When he moved the company to Afton, a lot of the workers were former Call Air employees. Probably some of those folks still work there. There are some masterful fabric slingers in that outfit as well as some of the best welders in the industry.

The current owner of the company is the third owner.

Thanks for the information MTV. The ribs in all the control surfaces sure helped my poor old back. The A9-A or B (later became Quail ) flew like it had hydraulics.

Wonderful. As the owner of a Husky A-1B, I can say that they are great airplanes.

That's great!

We were visiting friends in Jackson & Victor a couple of years ago and on our way back to our daughters house in salt lake we stopped in Afton for a tour. Great folks, went out of their way to give us a personalized tour of the plant and the owner came out to chat for a bit. We were impressed with the pride in workmanship we saw throughout the facility. One of my favorite parts was the old 150's & 152's parked for the re-furbish. Mentioned to our guide that we owned a 150 and he got exited and took us to the part of the plant where they work on those. Pretty cool overall. Once we hit the lottery we will fly the 150 out to get re-furbished, pick up our Husky and fly away into the sunset.

Re: Aviat Aircraft has come aboard as a site sponsor!

That's great Zane. I have a warm spot in my heart for the Aviat folk, as I utilize their remote opened power gate when I land on the north end of the runway at Afton (actually, at my own risk of course, I land in the grass along side the runway, carefully avoiding the few obstructions, lights etc., they have a grass strip there but it's clear the hell to the south end and too far to taxi). This LZ puts me 100' away from the gate, and as I already have the freq dialed into the radio, the gate is already opening and I then have a short taxi that ends behind a mechanic (cars/trucks, never met the people, usually Sunday when I go, so they're closed) shop with a large vacant lot. This lot is cheek by jowl to the Aviat tie down ramp, like 50' away.

I claim grandfather privileges in doing this, as I've been flying to Afton (or Alpine) for breakfast for going on 40 years, long before they built the new Afton strip and closed the old one. But then, I noticed the auto gate with a sign telling what freq opens it, and no KEEP THE HELL OUT verbiage after it, so in I went, and back into my old parking spot of the last few decades. Either they don't care, or haven't noticed (nah, they've noticed) but they seem to have no issues with me doing this. I make real sure I am not in the way, obviously. Nonetheless, the fact that I am able to do this tells you a lot about the company policy there, GOOD. Maybe the next time I taxi in there I'll see signs with "exclusive use of Aviat plant planes, stay out", and then some crap about liability and lawyers etc., but so far so good. Plus, they make real good airplanes =D>

For those that find themselves in Afton, and without my grandfather'd privileges, ask FBO Mark to use the loaner car, which is kind of a pisser as the cafe is real close but now due to all the fencing, you can't walk direct to it anymore and have to go clear around.

Great news! The Husky is an awesome back country airplane. While they seem to maintain a pretty low profile, Aviat is really an aviation success story, having sold nearly a thousand Huskies since it was first certified in 1987. There is a warm spot in my heart as well for the Aviat, Callair, Christenson, Pitts legacy. I worked for Aviat from 2001 - 2004 and got to know the people of Aviat pretty well.

I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for something like that, on my breakfast runs. It would seem to be a good marketing move on their part I think. I actually asked one their employees a while back just that, and was told that with the FAA considering higher limits on the whole LSA thing, no decision had been made, or something like that. Don't hold your breath in other words. Then again, maybe it's like the big auto makers having a higher profit margin on a 50 K SUV then a 18K econobox, a simpler less expensive bird may not be worth their time? The thing I notice, is the level of activity around the plant, full parking lot, lots of planes on the ramp, man, that's good to see!

I was told to show up this fall to fly "something" different. New puppy has occupied all my time, unfortunately.

I hope they come up with something new.....lots of smart people in that outfit, so no lsck of resources.
