Moving TO California huh? Did you lose a bet or something? :D

I'm actually looking forward to moving to California. My wife and I will both be closer to family, and most importantly the weather will be better for flying year round :D there's also more places to fly to.

Re: Back country strips near the Great Salt Lake

Rob, now is sure the time to buy a house in California. My brother is moving back to Utah from Vacaville. He is retired Air Force and was out of Travis. His house was appraised at 490K three years ago. He gave it back to the bank last year when prices plummeted and they just auctioned it last month for 139K. A lot of Realtors have foreclosure lists. Buy from one of them or straight from a bank if you can. They all have stuff for sale. Good luck!

The place we are looking at now has lost over 200k in value in the last few years, I'm hoping it goes back up when we are ready to sell :D

This is definately the time to buy in California. There are some great bargains here. Welcome to California! The fruits and nuts are mostly over on the coast, mostly. We live in the farming belt where folks grow... uh... fruits and nuts.

We ought to have a mini meet and greet when you get settled in. Joey, Emmet (also a bcp'er) and myself all live within about 50 miles of you.

Rob: I still think you should look for house on a airport or next to one, you know like about 60ft from the back door so you sneak out at first light, after school, or when you neeeed a soda. Dad

This is just on the other side of the valley from Vacaville, in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

I'd prefer Rio Vista myself.

Avidflyer (Joey) and I are headed out early Tuesday AM the 21st for JC, returning at dawn on Sunday the 26th. I think the 24th is Friday, so you might mean the 23rd. Would be great to have another in our flight, but may not work for your plans. If not, maybe the way back will.

Re: Back country strips near the Great Salt Lake

My dad leased Fremont Island for 5 years and ran sheep over there. (I spent a lot of boredom there.) The Richardson family owns the Island. I have been going to go back and check a few things out. Does anyone know if there still a camper, tractor, 1960's ski boat (blue), or any other items of interest. (Or did it burn in the fire?)

Also on the tallest knob on the island, there is a cross carved into a rock by Kit Carson. It is 3 1/2" wide and maybe 5" tall. There is also a cemetery on the south west end of the island. It had some neat headstones and classic iron fence around it.

If you ever go, drag your strips many times

Hey, welcome to CA. Count me in for the mini meet. I'm also in the area so let me know when & where. If I'm around I will join up with all of you.

I'll be in SC 5/28-6/4 , MT 6/21-6/25, ID & AK 7/18-8/18.

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

While we're on the subject, UBCP says camping is permitted at Spiral Jetty. Has anyone ever camped there? I'm just looking at alternates in case I can't make it to Ft. Bridger, or it's too windy there (which is likely.)

If for some reason you get pushed a little further north you are welcome to camp at my private airport. 2WY3.... I need to fly down there soon to see if the 12 feet of snow is all melted and the frigging gophers and badgers didn't screw up the runway... I have two windsocks and tie down rings in place so stopping in is a breeze... be warned,,, it is out in the middle of nowhere... Just the way I like it. =D> =D>

Scott,
It may be too far out off your way but, there are tie downs, a green lawn and a courtesy car at the Malad, ID airport (KMLD)

I was at Spiral Jetty last week at sunset. Billions and billions of tiny man eating knats.

Re: Back country strips near the Great Salt Lake

Ben, thanks! Out in the middle of nowhere is good. I'll definitely put that on my list of alternates. How windy does it get at your place? This is going to be my first cross country in this little kite so I'm going to be a little skittish about winds until I get more familiar with it.

Dave, I love Malad City. I stopped there once on my first trip to OSH. This little red head came running out with a baby on her hip asking me if I needed gas, courtesy car, phone... Real nice folks there.

SkySteve, that's some dang fine intel there. That's enough to get me to look elsewhere.

Does anyone know the status of Delle? It says you can by auto fuel there, is that true? Is it open, usable?
