Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

Anyone here flying with their motorcycle?
A street legal bike would be awesome but could get heavy with a battery and lights. A lot of places we fly to (backcountry) I don't think it would have to be street legal if you mind your p's & q's.
The locals of Yellow pine, Idaho roam the streets on their ATV's with a beer in hand.
I think it would be a blast to fly to breakfast in the morning and hop on a light weight bike and explore old mines in the afternoon.

A trip to Alaska with a motorcycle.

A light weight candidate.

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

Wow, I need to go to bed and can't read the story about the Ducati 250 in the Cessna, but I have been collecting (hoarding) those little things since about 1991. I actually have been considering culling the heard a bit to fund a Highlander, probably could build a really nice highlander if I sold them all.

I have been looking at ways to fit my Husqvarna SRM450R in an airplane. It only weighs 235 pounds, but its the height that is the problem. I have helped shove bikes in planes a few times, even an 1100 CC Ducati in a 206, but we took the wheels off. It take a few guys to get it in or out with out destroying both plane and bike.

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

This is the one I want. It weighs 125 lbs but you would probably need to take off the wheels to get it in.

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

Almost completely off topic, but since keeping weight down is important, why not consider a 25 lb (roughly) folding bicycle. I have a "Bike Friday" that IMO, seems way more practical to pack around than a "lightweight" motorcycle or scooter. Side benefit - - riding bicycles helps keep pilot weight down too. :)

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

I used to watch a guy load and unload a Trials 250 with lights and blinkers in a Cessna 177. He would land, tiedown, unload and drive away within 15 min. I was interested and walked over to ask if he needed help. He said no and it was easier by himself. I need a bike that can carry 2, go 70 mph for 250 miles, weight 250 lbs max, the bike height is an issue for my 206 cargo doors so I have been looking at step thru scooters (not cool but might fit). At our operation we get requests for a jump plane while their plane is down for repairs. They only need my planes and pilots for a few weekends but just the weekly ferry cost can stop a deal. What do you do with the pilot? Someone has to drive 8 hours twice to move him around. I load my bicycle and camping gear in the plane but the bicycle only gets used for running around the airport. I have found that after a while I know where Im going and the bicycle is ok but most places I need to go are to far away from the airport or to difficult to get to on bicycle. I even built a 25mph electric bike to fill the bill but you really need to know where you are going because when the batteries die a lead filled bicycle sucks. It seems that if people you can afford a plane big enough to carry a motorcycle they can pay for a rental car.

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

Neighbor flew down to Boulder from Seattle with 2 ea.450' cc's dirt bikes in back of 205 -and 2 pilots .Cramped but did happen. One Honda and another Suzizke ?Front wheels off.I've got pictures in my computer if I could just post them -or send me a email at stingers address and I'll send them. Myself have a TOTE Goat weighs about 160 lbs.( see http://jleibovitch.tripod.com/id242.htm)All terrain transportation -only does 25-30 mph -anywhere---no plates or on street equipment.Mine is slightly shorter and front half detaches for loading.Thinking of taking it to Idaho next summer -trying to find out if they will let it go on highway to store. It does go into 182 with 2 people -6 hp Continental( maybe replacing with harbor fright 6 1/2 hp) engine-3 wheels (2 in back -one front) has a big cargo compartment.

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

A bicycle will barley fit in my Champ. I am planning on leaving 2 motorcycles at my inlaws, who live 5 minutes from Arlington Wa.
Doesn't do me much good if I go other places, but the Champ is also fairly limited as to where I can go in it.

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

I realize that by following the Champ issue I threadheaded the topic toward bicycles. Here is the ultimate folding motorized bike. Orange County Chopper Style. http://www.motorizedfoldupbikes.com/
Bottom center of page.

Back on topic.

Late Note: I just called this outfit and they are no longer offering the OCC motorized Scwinn. He also told me that one won't fold. Sorry.

Hey James, I like the CT-70 in your Maule! I have two CTs. Would like to figure out getting one into my Super Cub. I have extended baggage and can remove rear seat back. Do you know how much it weighs off hand? I will search around.

Wow that ones pretty cool. I was thinking of getting the Swiss Bike http://www.montaguebikes.com/swissbike- ... cycle.html

That back pack bike might be worth looking into, but I can see ending up wanting to ride single track, or go longer distances than a small wheel bike might be good for. By 24" BMX bike is a pain to ride more than 10 miles or so on.

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

Here is what I did, I built two Bazooka 26”Navagator full suspension folding mountain bikes with Golden Eagle motor kits and Subaru 35cc four stroke engines on them, these engine kits have a unique toothed belt drive that clips to the spokes, (no friction drive) they will achieve and honest 28 to 30 on the flats, effortless cruse @ 22 to25 and will pull a pretty good hill, even with my fat ass @ 275, pleased to say it is now 243 and still dropping, better if you assist. The bikes weigh 50LB each with comfort seats tail lights head light, tool kit and speedos. In our 172, I remove the back seat and put one on each side with the camping gear in the middle. They take no more than several minutes each to fold up and unfold. When I built them several years ago they were about $1200 each complete, now I think it would be closer to $1600 each. The wife and I have a blast on them and people always comment.
I wish I had the hole attach a pic deal down, I would love to show you pics, but I’m a bit of a computer tard. #-o

Hey Buggs66,
I think the Honda Trail 70 is 140 pounds. Good luck.
