Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

For those who can't carry a full motorcycle, it seems the motorized mtn bike could certainly be an option. I've seen a couple that used chainsaw motors, which works well because they already come with a centrifugal clutch.

There are quite a few examples on youtube.

The speed is in Kph and friction drives eat tires, overheat tubes, shake themselfs apart. If you keep the speed below 25 mph on a friction drive it works ok but as you go up to 30+ the above happens. Built one.

One of these would fit in a cub and be good for short distances.

I don't know how you could get lighter than that. If I can find my old roller skate key I could clamp one to each foot. Twice the fun.

More practical than this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vyOwvEKms8
If it had wings, who needs the plane?

The kid in me says that looks really cool.
But I'm just old enough to see how it also looks like a trip to the ER!

And, the inventor is a guy named Steve Patmont, who was one of the first big time hang glider pilots back in the early '70's. He flew a Mitchell Wing, I got to fly with him and it somewhere in SoCal back then. The thing was quite the performer, but looked like it was pretty demanding to land!

Good guy and the Go-Ped is a high quality product with top grade components. I'll stick with my Montague though, I especially like the fact that it looks like a regular bike so you can be a little lower profile while on it. The Go-Ped would be easier to carry into the bar though, (waiting out bad weather, small towns in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, having a way to get there from the airstrip, priceless! And yes, no more flying that day!) Thread drift, sorry.

We have goped with electric start - makes a good airport scooter but I'd stay off the highways with it. Ours (Bruce and mine)has made the trip from Columbia airport to "town" several times and back. Faster than walking - about 10-15 mph -uses tires and tube like crazy -2 cycle mix fuel 5 gallon can will last all summer . I still prefer my Tote goat for extended off road engagements. I've also got a folding full sized mountain bike (10-12 speed) that can go in airplane (in fact it went from Houston to L.A. in back of Monney)-it's for sale for what I gave for it @150 smackers . Ridden vary little in last year I've had it -

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

I had a friend years ago who rebuilt classic motorcycles - Indians, Vincents, etc. Used to haul them to shows in the back of a 206. He was an accomplished machinist and built special tie downs that attached to the seat rails as I recall. You wouldn't want a load like that moving around in flight!

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

I bought a 80cc 2 cycle engine on ebay that had everything to mount it on a bike. One of my folding bikes now goes about 40 mph. btw, it doesnt fold anymore and it fits in the 205 with front wheel removed. cost around $100 when I did it a year ago.

Re: Backcountry flying with your motorcycle?

I carry a full-size motorcycle on most flights and it has greatly enriched my flying experience. Here’s how I do it:

The motorcycle in the video is a modified Yamaha XT-225. It’s street-legal and comfortably hauls two adults down the highway. The pod has an internal winch system so I can load/unload the motorcycle without any heavy lifting. After a little practice, my girlfriend and I can hit the road in less than 90 seconds. The pod is also great for hauling bicycles, skis, golf clubs and other bulky cargo. It also comes off the airplane in 30 seconds when I don’t need it.

I started working on the setup about three years ago. Eventually, I founded MotoPOD LLC to provide pilots with innovative ground transportation solutions. We’re still a very small company but we’re working hard to make flying more fun and convenient. Feel free to visit our website for more information: http://www.MotorcyclePilot.com

My motorcycle is about 950 lbs. It might be easier for it to carry my old 172 than the other way around! :D

Has anyone actually rode one of these? I have been dreaming of an off-road bike for off-airport adventures for a long time. This sure looks like the ticket, I really like the weight. I see they are for sale on Amazon for the best price..... Not sure I can resist much longer.

UtahMaule,

Buy one so I can tag along while you test it! I too have been looking at go-peds for years thinking it may open up some fun possibilities at some of the Utah strips. :D
